Indeed I did draw a gen tag with 1 point. Applied alone thinking there was no way I'd be drawn, so of course I was the only one in my party with a tag...
Two ways, I think..
Sneak your way to him, hoping to get into his area undetected as he is running around and distracted. Pretty tough to do with all the eyes and ears of the cows. If the cows bust you (and the bull hasn't seen you), you better be prepared to immediately throw a lip bawl or...
sounds a lot like my Montana hunt in November. 4 days of finding nothing in multiple backcountry spots. I did see a few hundred in separate places out by the highway on private land though!! :)
I built an annealer based on the MGNZ design. Even bought his 3d printed case feeder. Im pretty handy and can follow a wiring diagram and its quite a bit more automated and precise than the propane flame designs.
hard to find anything better than the 180 ELDM for price and performance. Best in class ballistic coefficients and I killed a cow elk bang flop at about 250 yards this season.
Interesting. No beef with private landowners, just saying there doesnt seem to be any tactics I can employ other than moving on. All 3 zones I hunted had relatively poor road access (one main road in only) but I found boot tracks 3-4 miles back in some cases.
Just got back from a few days in SW Montana. In all 3 spots I hunted, in 3 separate zones (all 3xx) I found no elk in the backcountry save for a set of lone bull tracks that I followed and ultimately bumped him from his bed. I am usually pretty good at finding likely good glassing spots and...
Following. I've been shooting 180 ELDM out of mine with excellent accuracy but want to try some different bullets. I've been accumulating hornady brass and I'd guess in 6 months from now we will have more components available. I have H4831SC and H1000 on hand for testing. Interested in StaballHD...
Just got home from SW montana. Not a single elk-made bugle all week. Saw several small groups but also some solo cows and solo bulls. The encounters I experienced had bulls sneaking in silently to cow calls.
My 2c,
Hammer bullets don't care about jump. Shoot great in multiple rifles whether I load long or to spec.
ELD-M seem more particular. My best loads in 2 different rifles, 2 different calibers is 0.040 - 0.050" off the lands. Closer is worse in every instance for me.
You are overthinking this. Shot placement above all else, and there is nothing wrong with any of the options you laid out. This choice is not going to make or break your hunt.
Did you test the hammers on your own or read about them online? I'll just say.. BC very close to advertised out to 500 yds in my 7mm08 with several dead elk shot at various distances to show for it.
You would really benefit from listening to an elknut podcast on calling. You have to understand the situation and he does a great job explaining what to do in various scenarios.
