    2023 Blacktail Success Thread

Appreciate it! The rain and low ceiling made for some crappy goat hunting but led to favorable stalking conditions down low.

Truck camping when its too damn hot!

I have a Bluetti auxiliary battery I have wired into a switch panel (super easy to do) that sits in the back of the bed with a topper. I wired a 12V fan into the panel and that was able to keep me cool enough to sleep when I lived out of my truck for 6 months. Spent august split between Utah and...

    Trail cam tips or tricks

I’ve used probably 5 different mid tier trail cameras but keep going to the $30 Walmart tascos. They’re great for the price, batteries last 9+ months with frequent pics, pretty reliable (I’ve had 2 go bad in 4 years out of about 24), and i can buy a bunch to blanket an area. Similar to other...

    Home Bulk Ice Maker

Depending on where you live, maybe look into those ice dispenser units off of roads. The ones around me run $2.50/20lbs bulk or $2.50/16lbs bagged. They can sometimes be a pain to track down but if you can find one it may be a cheap option.

    But... You don't understand!

Best one I’ve got is someone dropping out the morning we’re supposed to meet for a 4 day hunt because they only had 7 hours of sleep and not their usual 8, said it wasn’t safe to drive the 3.5 hours on that little sleep. Pretty sure a warm body next to him in bed had something to do with that...

    Who's driving a 300k+ mileage rig

2002 Silverado 1500 5.3 V8, 340,000 on original engine and tranny. Has been run hard hauling 28ft+ boats and horse trailers and plowing snow, but no major issues. Redid the u joints around 330,000, just replaced most of the HVAC system, and has the Chevy clunk but still clipping along.

    Tennessee Turkey

Will be hunting turkeys and camping in Tennessee from May 5-14. Super mobile and not tied to any region, if anyone wants to link up to hunt public or knock on door permission for any window in that 9 day timeframe shoot me a pm and let’s talk! I’m far from a turkey slayer, still learning to not...

How much wildgame does your family eat?

Single guy in college. At least 2 meals a day have wild game. This season I put 6 deer (Alabama sized, no larger than 160lbs really), a hog, a couple of ducks, and trying to put away a couple of turkeys in the freezer and I’d be surprised if it lasted till October when our deer season starts up...

    Cap pack or decked system?

Cost me $500 to build out of 3/4” plywood with lumber prices, and about 24 hours of work using just a circular saw for cutting. Very nice to be able to keep all gear organized and secure in the truck and still be able to have a sleeping platform. Drawers sit as high as my wheel wells so it’s a...

    Kids first vehicle……

Drove the family Prius through college to save money on the 1 hour commute. Sweet little car, but grad school took me away from the family and I needed a do it all vehicle so I bought the family work truck off my dad as “my” first vehicle. 2002 Silverado 5.3 V8 with 320k on the odometer. He had...

Any one use a Subaru as a hunting buggy

Split my time in college between a 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5XT and a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 Ext Cab and both got a ton of hunting related use in the southeast. They both had their strengths and weaknesses but I’ll try to speak directly towards the Outback. Starting with the weaknesses, early...

Who else has caught the Rona?

I had it about 3 weeks ago. I went to a wedding and a couple days later I started showing mild symptoms (tired, little bit of a cough) so I got tested twice with the rapid antigen test. Both came back negative. Symptoms generally improved until about 5 days from the wedding and that’s when I...

    How low can you go?

Absolutely not, especially if you’re shooting a parallel or beyond limb bow. My bows usually end up 2-4# under peak draw weight by the time I’m done with everything and have never had one not be able to bareshaft at 40 because of the bow not being maxed. I’ll say this as well. If you want to...
