    Bringing a Smart Water bottle instead of a Nalgene, and as backup for if your bladder freezes, is pretty minimal weight cost. I usually bring both in the late season and sometimes keep that Smart Water in my sleeping bag.

    I would call SG again and ask for more help getting the pack set up. They have always been very helpful for me. Personally, I wear the belt real tight so don't see how it could move. Is he wearing a belt or pants with a thick belt loops or something?

    The Frontiersman by Allan Eckert. This is a biography of Simon Kenton. He was every bit the explorer and woodsman that Boone was but for some reason Americans latched onto Boone and Kenton doesn't really get mentioned. An amazing life and a bit more exciting then some of the Boone biographies...
