Its not horses but for Donkeys/Burros I look for pretty much the exact same thing- attitude/temperment.
If the animal is willing to follow and seems interested in you and whats happening- ears forward, standing straight. That is my main focus.
I also try and avoid ones that have been super...
Who else is getting out? Seems to be still snowing in the northern states but I’m sure people are still out and about.
Here are some from this weekend in the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico- in the third picture there is a object that doesn’t belong. Animals could have cared less with it...
The logs sound about right. Getting them to jump higher logs with full packs is tough. Above knee high is about the limit for height so I carry I nice fanno 24in pack saw.
Trailering is tough. Took me about a year to get them to reliablly load in a two horse straight load. When we started out...
I've got a couple in NM. I was just in Monte Vista last weekend for burro race- was supposed to be in Creede but it got moved. I'd recommend getting involved in those races, alot of us racers hunt/pack

Heck yeah man! Congrats on giving it a shot. I don't have a ton of sage advice but we do have quite a few mini mule packers/drivers in my local Mule and Donkey Association. Where do you live?
Remember that mules and donkeys live extremely long. You essentailly bought toddlers, and they will be...
With a few years of tough luck in the NM draw we have been looking at making the trek to Arkansas to do a hunt similar like this. Looked at options in NE and OK but their tags seem a little expensive. Found AR and for a couple hundred bucks they give you a pile of tags.
Ether this fall or in...
Same here, I've got a couple left hand bolt actions that are amazing but I am looking forward to the change.
Also you always see, X brand of synthetic rifle with a turretted scope at the trailhead. It'll be neeat to have something different.
I had one of those mornings where you wake up, an decide you need something. Then a day turns into months and I finally decided to commit to it. My new to me Marlin 1895CB 26in Octogon Barrel JM in 45-70. I'm excited to go down the lever action road.
I'll likley be shooting one of the...

Looking through my outfitters supply catalog I noticed there are side pull mule halters. Looks like you can get halters with a ring for the lead on the side of the halter. What is the purpose of this? Are their other differences?

Do you all prefer rope or nylon halters in the backcountry...
Goats, Llamas, and Burros are all great choices for someone who likes to hike. I would suggest getting out with some first to see if it is really a route you want to go.
I think one of the things that draws me to running over other forms of training is that it only takes a pair of shoes.
No gym membership, no drive to the gym, no bike to fix, flats to repair. Just shoes.
I'm not the best at staying motivated so if I get off work, mindlessly put on my shoes...
Same as above, I've done a few 50k trails and would like to step up too 100k but man, that is so much time spent reunning when I'd rather be dinking around in the woods.
Most my training is running. 3-4 days a week, some times 6 days, sometimes 1 day. Depends on the work schedule. This winter...
I pull my two horse bumper pull with a 2009 chevy 1500 (5.3L?) extended cab, my two buros, and all the crap. This year I went from Southern New Meixco to mid-Montana. Essentially from Canada to Mexico . A frontier sounds like you'd be right there at the edge for comfort and safety.
Your correct...
