Southeast alaska has forest service cabins available for rent. They are generally pretty nice and reasonable. There is one south of sitka 15 miles or so that would be pretty sublime with some fuel for stove (either gas or kerosene depending on the cabin), food, beverages, and a means of...
I have a pair of 7 x 56 meoptas that I absolutely love. When I was in the market for 15's I really wanted to like the swaro's but the interpupillary distance just didn't work well for me. I thought I had read somewhere that the newer models have addressed this issue but if it could be an issue...
Lived in Butte for a bit while in college. The rough reputation is deserved in proper context. When I was a poor college student in poor uptown areas I had my wrought iron gate and fence stolen in stages. Lost a mountain bike. Watched a toddler in diapers smoke cigarettes while hiding between me...
I'm in se alaska so I do use the included cap when it's raining. I don't use that as a spark arrestor though. I bought some stainless mesh arrestors from one of the other stove companies but can't remember for the life of me who it was. I place this on the bottom right above the damper. Fits...
I've had one for over a year now. Works great in a SO 8man. Haven't tried other brands so can't compare but can say it is as easy to set up as it looks.
I grew up in Challis. Easy to find space to hunt. At least 30 years ago it was over the counter deer with decent success for cow tags. We used to pick up cancelations for the middle fork of the salmon float lotteries at the ranger station in town which was pretty neat. The valley itself and...
I enjoyed living in Helena. Lots of all you like close by. Biggest muley I ever saw hung out around the Catholic Cathedral right by downtown. Good restaurants, low crime. Good hunting and fishing culture.
I'm in se alaska and fish extensively out of kayaks. For landing I carry a lip gripper, a kage which is a Hawaiian spear with a sharpened all thread tip, and a harpoon. Lip gripper gets at least 95 percent of them.
Nets are a mess in a kayak. Have you tried a lip gripper? Leave a little more line on your rod so you can get them close with your rod nearing vertical. Try not to break the surface of the water with the fish, keep it a couple of inches under. If it runs you can just lower your rod.
Couple other thoughts come to mind especially for first timers and safety. If you are climbing have a rifle management system. You are not going to jump deer. If you are hunting the old growth go slower than slow and ready to go. For muskeg I use a kifaru gunbearer, trekking sticks, and binos...
A few guys have nailled it here. It is no mistake that the first and arguably the best modern hunting gear is branded se alaska (sitka, kuiu). You can do the same principle cheaper. Moisture management. Layers. Fitness. It's been a wet la nina summer. Watch the randy newberg blacktail video...
That experience is as harrowing as it gets. Sincere question. If you found those people alive would you give your all to help them? Would you point your ar at em and march them to a death on the other side of the border? Would you seek for their asylum or give them a doing 31 in a 30 zone...
I do come here for the hunting and gear. Lurk 99.9 percent of the time because that's enough for my gear whore addiction. I read posts like this and dont see an innocent gear request. I see people who are obviously trained in either police or military tactics chomping at the bit to play the...
We are not speaking a different language. The premise of this and all threads of this nature are that you are forced from your home. It's a hard premise to swallow.
