Best tent for Alaska sheep hunt

Anyone running the Niak floorless? If so, do you know what it weighs? Hilleberg tents are awesome. Once you use an external pole tent you'll never use anything else. Been using a Nallo 3 for years. Akto and Enan are nice but aren't tall enough to sit up in comfortably.

    Durable trekking pole

I'm a Black Diamond fan. My first pair lasted 8-9 years before I snapped one glissading down a snow shoot. My second pair is probably 8-9 years old. Can't tell you how many times I've fallen on them or caught them between rocks with a fully loaded pack. Lots of "please don't be bent" moments...

Who has ditched the trusted Nalgene bottle?

I'm trying to remember if I've ever taken a Nalgene on a hike or hunt? I stick with Gatorade or similar bottles. Cheap and half the weight.

Talk me out of 300 WSM

Do not buy a 300 wsm! Did that sound convincing enough? No. That's because the 300wsm is an awesome round and you need one in your safe. 180 gr. Accubonds or Partitions would be where I'd start working up loads.

    2022 Haul road hunt

Could be spam. The buying gear question throws me off. Ill play though. You should still be able to find a rental. Make sure the rental company allows you to take the rental up the Dalton Hwy. A Uhaul pickup or van is also an option. You're driving to the end of the earth. Make sure you...

    Carnivore Diet

Humans are omnivores. We slowly evolved from herbivores to omnivores over hundreds of thousands of years. Eating a carnivore diet doesn't make you a carnivore. Your body is still designed to be an omnivore. Which means to be healthy your body needs those fruit and vegetables. Are 7 out of...

    Frog gigging?

Giggin with my buddy while growing up in Missouri is some of those memories you never forget. When I was a young teen my best buddy had a couple ponds. We'd walk knee to waste deep out in the water each with flashlights and gigging poles. Shine the flashlight in the bullfrog eyes to freeze...

    Carnivore Diet

Curious if anyone has tracked their health stats while on this diet; blood pressure, cholesterol, etc? All the benefits people are describing (weight loss, mental clarity, less hungry, ect.) are the same people get by cutting out processed sugars, gluten and processed grains. So why not just...

    Dall Sheep Success…

I need to start hunting sheep in mountains like those. A couple preseason walks around the block and you’re in sheep shape. :) Congrats on the ram!

    AK sheep hunt September clothing

Yep, been fairly wet all across the state. A buddy left tonight for a sheep hunt in the Delta Control Use (eastern Alaska Range). This morning he checked in with the fish and game for the area. They have had less than half the amount of rams checked in as they had at this time last year...

    AK sheep hunt September clothing

Its a sheep hunt. If you aren't a little cold, wet, hungry, and tired then you're not doing it right. Just spent 8 days in the Brooks Range. Had snow and sleet, nights below freezing, wind chills below freezing a couple days. I had very similar condition the second week of September in the...

    Wind in the Brooks Range?

Just got back from the Brooks. We had a pretty wet hunt. Snow, sleet, rain, low clouds, then rinse and repeat. Had some winds but nothing extreme or out of what would be expected in the mountains. Didn't really get any of the dense fog. Weather breaks, when you got them, seemed to always...

    Wind in the Brooks Range?

Wondering what the typical winds are like in the Brooks? Anyone have enough time in the Brooks to lend some insight? I know its the mountains and it can always blow up but some ranges are worse than others. I’ve spent a bunch of time in the Wrangells and can’t recall any bad wind days. The...

    Great Olympics so far

Turned it on tonight to women's duet synchronize swimming. I had the same thought you're having right now. Turned out to be pretty amazing. Then I saw the womens gold metal wrestling match. Then some volleyball, then skateboarding. They were all great. I love the Olympics. I haven't...

T-minus 7 days and counting and I will be a sheephunter!

If you don't have trekking poles, please, please, please go buy some. I watched a number of Billy Molles hunts recently and half his clients don't have trekking poles. And they all pay for it!

T-minus 7 days and counting and I will be a sheephunter!

Tip, take care of you feet. Stop immediately and tape any rub or hot spot. If you wait and power through, you will pay. Leukotape is the best tape ever. About day 4 of going hard, you're body will hit a wall and your mind will want to do the same. Power through this wall and your body will...

First time sheep hunter with a TMA tag

All of my sheep hunts have been 7-9 days each. Never have I been less than 60lb pack weight at the start of a hunt. I'm typically 62-64 lbs. Maybe this will be my year to get under 60 lbs. Honestly if I swapped my Barney's pack for something like a Stone Glacier I would cut a couple lbs and...

    Sleep system advise

If the quilt is lighter I would run the quilt. I'm running the EE Revelation 10 degree quilt. It's been on a couple sheep hunts. Like other, I also pack puffy pants and jacket and have worn them to bed on freezing nights. You can also zip up your rain jacket and slide it over the toe box for...
