    Polar Vortex Impact on Aoudad

The cold will not affect Aoudad at all. They do fine here in NM into the -10F range at times. I would rather we have aoudads than nothing. Bighorn sheep take a fortune to just keep alive and then only offer a very limited number of tags. They can't intermingle with domestic sheep and...

    Taxidermy of African Animals

Get it mounted in the USA by a reputable taxidermist. The African stuff is not even close in quality. Don't save any backskins, you will probably never use them. Some animals look good as European mounts, (Wildebeest, Warthog, Buffalo). Shipping is never cheap as mentioned above already.

November '23 Himalayan Blue Sheep story

Congratulations!! Looks like you had a great hunt. My brother and I were the first hunters of the season with Mahesh. I was the one with the Remington 700 in 7mm RM.

    SW Mule Deer Struggles

Sounds like you were in NM. Deer numbers are terrible. I wish I had the answer as to why that is, but I don't. They are a mere fraction of what they were 25 years ago. Southeastern NM has just gotten worse and worse for years now.

    Go in deep!

I will call BS on many of those stories. No, you are not a puss. You are smart and ethical from what I can tell in your post. I have packed out many an elk and at this point I always use a mule. A mule or horse can get darn near anywhere and it makes elk hunting so much more enjoyable.

    New mexico season dates change

Here are a few reasons: Too hot. Capes were terrible. Meat spoilage. In the SW part of the state they hadn't even finished growing their horns. The better bucks were getting killed before breeding season. I was on a hunt with my brother when it was 105F when he killed his antelope. I...

In your experience, where are the biggest, most rugged mountains?

In my personal experience which is mainly the southern Rockies, I think Colorado would fit the bill for the Lower 48. I would rate the Needles in the San Juans, the Sangre de Cristos or the Raggeds around Crested Butte all about the same. I have limited experience in Idaho, Montana or...

    NM Paper Tags

They are usually stickers. NMDGF sent out an email saying that they could not get the normal paper due to the ever present "supply chain issues", and to put it in a ziploc and tape it to the antlers.

    Today I learned I don't know what a 300" bull is

Nice bull! Looks like you measured accurately. You will find that most scores on the internet are from the WAG method. (Wild A** Guess). You usually will find that if you subtract 5" from antelope 10" from coues, 20" from muleys and 50" from elk you are in the correct ballpark.

    Central Asia 2022

I have done both of these hunts (Kazakhstan for the ibex). I used a 7mm magnum. Either gun would work, but I would go with the .300 WM. If for some reason your ammo doesn't arrive it would be hard to find 6.5-284, but finding the common calibers like 7mm, .300 WM is possible. As said above...

Single best pic you've ever taken

One of my favorite pictures. My brother took this one of his Maral in Kazakhstan. (no high fences, completely wild, absolute beast of a maral stag) Recent picture of an African wild dog I took in Mozambique.

Odds my July NWT dall hunt happens?

The part that really rubbed me the wrong way in Shockey's article is right at the end. "Would the loss of one year’s worth of your discretionary holiday dollars affect your financial future?" He acts like this is just play money to all the clients. He seems to take no regard that the clients...

Odds my July NWT dall hunt happens?

Here is an article that will scare many of you. After reading this I will never plan on booking a hunt with Jim Shockey. In the future I will probably avoid Canada altogether and head to Alaska or Russia instead. I definitely would not drop a huge deposit on a hunt and would not pay in full...

    AR15.com booted by GoDaddy

We live in crazy times. The big tech companies that just colluded to try and destroy Parler (Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google) are evil. They want to have all the protections of section 230 but then want to be able to silence speech they do not agree with. They can have one or the...

Unpopular Opinion: I don't like Dave Ramsey

Some of you guys on here act like investments never go down. See the above post #69. If you had bought that car with a loan in late 2007 and invested the rest of the money in the stock market at the same time you would have been underwater for the next 5 years. The market has ups and downs...

How are New Mexico covid restrictions going to impact hunting?

From what I can tell it had a slight impact. I heard of a few people not going on their hunts. Most out of staters came on their hunts and had a good time. A quarantine makes no sense if you are coming from an area with Covid and going to an area with Covid. It would only make sense if you...

transferring elk stink to the meat

Hough, everywhere I have hunted requires the antlers for males, or the scalp on cow elk. I have never left the testicles attached. Elk will be fine if skinned, quartered and left overnight. I have done that many times. If just gutted and left on the ground overnight you are just asking to...

    Barnes TSX vs nosler Partition?

Stick with the TSX if you have a good load and are comfortable with it. I have been using 160 gr. TSX in 7mm mag and they have worked excellent on everything from Red Duiker in Africa to elk here in NA and maral in Kazakhstan. I agree with the Ford vs. Chevy comment above. They are both...
