I hunt that general area most years. Very rough terrain. Glad you are going early so you can understand what to train for. Bring an inreach and make sure you are marking water. Water is easy in that area down low, but finding seeps and springs up higher makes life much easier. Find a bunch as...
I keep thinking about the freeze drier. At some point I think it needs to happen for me. I would rather make my own. You probably have much better food options than me.
Yes, I typically wait till I'm back. My food is usually pre workout and vitamin packet in the morning, bone broth while glassing, ramen packet mid day, and a meal at night. The hot Nalgene has been great a couple of rough nights.
I haven't tried that. I typically only eat 1 per day for back country hunts and eat it just prior to evening gladsing. Not sure I could wait that long.
They are small but it creates a hole bigger than the 180's I shot out of my 30-06. I used to use various 30 cal cartridges but we use 6.5 and 6mm almost exclusively now. Far more enjoyable to go shoot 100 rounds out of these. Good luck
I picked the unit I hunt based on being able to get a tag every year. The better you know a unit the more success you have. Being in an excellent unit doesn't matter if you don't know where the deer are.
Awesome old buck. I would guess 8 by the teeth alone. What did the taxidermist guess? It would be worth sending in either way. I've only killed a few bucks that had teeth that looked like that. All were on the decline (personal opinion) of horn growth. Congratulations on getting a cagey old deer.
I have run into too many griz in eastern idaho to be comfortable calling. I've never been scared of black bear but the first time you have a 1,000lb griz warn you is the last time you want that to happen. I'm also not too keen on bringing in cats.
I have a high end scope on my long gun too, but my wife has used mid range Leopold scopes for years now and they work great in low light for $800 ish scopes. If you aren't dialing and not shooting far that is the route I would go. I put a 4-10 on a 30-06 and have never needed anything nicer on it.
I think the hardest part of wolves is the inability to manage them. Here in WI and neighboring MN they have devastated deer herds in the north. Then they start killing everything else they can catch. Being able to hunt them would help but they are incredibly adept at avoiding hunters. Hunters...
This was a great question. I've tossed around buying a nice call for a couple of years. The downside is I hike a ton and wasn't sure if buying a large foxpro Shockwave for $$$ or going small was better. I got a small hand-held electric call matched with a separate decoy and can tell you that...
Excellent footwear and more training then seems necessary will help with getting around. Onx helped a lot. Ross gave some great advice. Shocking how many more animals I saw once I got comfortable hiking in the dark.
That is the weird part. 51 minutes on hold and not one caller has gone through. Fun times. I'm glad I just plan on being on my couch for this each year.
I would imagine more and more people are going in person now if they can. If I was number 200 and had a chance at diamond creek I would probably buy it too even though I always hunt elsewhere. That is part of the reason I hunt where I do. Better to know and hunt a slightly tougher unit every...
