IMHO, the best cut of the elk is...

Totally agree, I had the same experience with my shanks. Like the richest fattiest moistest pot roast you’ve ever had.

    WTB Nosler Accubond .338 225gr

Hi all I’m in bad shape need some 225 grain white tip ABs in 338 for an upcoming ID trip. I don’t even need an entire box, 30 would be great, 35 would be spectacular. I’ll pay cash and shipping, or can trade 270 or 7mm bullets in several different makes and weights. Got these loads built...

    WTB Boys youth camo

Looking for youth camo for 10 year old string bean son. I don’t know where the food goes, honestly we feed him. A lot. Getting geared up for first turkey season this spring. Not looking for freebies, prepared to pay fair value. Please let me know if you have anything that we might be...

    Waterfowl Hunters!

I live in western WA and the 1 pintail limit is a little hard to understand here. Pintails are very easily one of the most numerous species we encounter in the field. Not quite as much as mallards, but probably about as often as widgeon, perhaps even more so some days. Unless the abundance of...

2020 Solo Backcountry Idaho Elk Recap

Appreciate everyone’s feedback, glad people enjoyed my recap. Had a few people remark on my Danner experience. Maybe I do have the best pair in the country, but I will take it! I will say I sized down a 1/2 size to accommodate for the roomier toe box on these boots, so they really fit my feet...

    Leaving elk quarters overnight

I did the clothing scarecrow trick and piss all over, also hung a space blanket in the tree next to the meat. In any breeze, Space blankets are pretty loud, reflect moonlight, and smell pretty toxic to boot.

Area with elk that wont bugle? 3 years-5 bugles

I’d be very curious to know the general whereabouts of this area you hunt if you wanted to PM me? I’m in WA state, and your description sounds EXACTLY like the ridge I hunt with the sheep and camping and predators. I do my hunting from a tree stand and am also up there every September and have...

2020 Solo Backcountry Idaho Elk Recap

Hey Matt good to hear from you!! I’ll shoot you a PM. Still chuckling about your platoon you brought in to haul your bulls out. Hah, I was really doing my some soul searching about my current choice of friends after seeing a whole team show up within hours to help pack you out!! Where did I...

2020 Solo Backcountry Idaho Elk Recap

Some final notes on gear. My Mystery Ranch Pintler was great, would definitely make that purchase again, it packed like a mule. Loved having the Kifaru universal gun bearer, absolutely essential to be hands free. Little embarrassed to say it, but this was the first trip I have ever used hiking...

2020 Solo Backcountry Idaho Elk Recap

The bull immediately crumples. I haven't talked much up to this point about the steepness and elevation I have dealt with throughout this week, but it was intense. After a week, I suppose I had just kind of gotten used to the world being more vertical than horizontal. This bull was standing on a...

2020 Solo Backcountry Idaho Elk Recap

I had completely broke down my camp when I had pulled out on Tuesday, so arriving into the basin mid morning, I set up camp, again. I was hunting by early afternoon. After an hour or two in the basin I had set up in, I made the decision to jump over the saddle separating my basin from the next...

2020 Solo Backcountry Idaho Elk Recap

hey all Have never put the time in to post a thread like this in all my hunting and fishing adventures, but I felt this one needed to be told. Rewind back to early in 2020, before everything went to hell. I had coordinated a trip my family and I had talked about for several years, an Idaho...

30-30 Winchester and Goats: Another Cartridge Question

Love the nostalgia, I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff too. I harvested my elk this year with a custom 338WM Mauser my Grandfather, a firearm most would keep in the safe. He wouldn’t want it being a safe queen, so into the field it goes. I’ve also got two Big Bore 94s, in a .375 win and...

    Bad day in Idaho panhandle

Yes, but the population has about doubled in the last 50 years, and meanwhile the access to huntable lands has probably been more than halved.
