Where I hunt for bear it is extremely thick country. I typically carry a spotting scope but there won't be a lot of use for it's weight. It's also legal to use electronic calls for bear here (WA state) so switching the weight to the foxpro is the plan.
Which model Foxpro do you guys go with for...
Based on your posts I’m thinking your plan C may be a bit better than a lot of people’s plan A.
Good luck. Hate to see all that pre season work go to waste but that’s part of it
Getting above it seems to be the only tactic that works well. I haven’t figured out anything else that works yet. My tripod doesn’t go very low so I may end up switching that some time in the future
So far I have been surprised by the lack of manzanita berries coming in. In the areas I have looked at, the manzanita crop has been reduced. The yield of manzanita berry per tree looks a lot lower than previous years.
You’re seeing them come in, but are you also seeing less of them per tree?
I have had a similar experience in other years. Also a bit un easy one year when I was pretty far back there and the smoke started getting thick. The website is great to check before you get out there and before you lose reception. Once you're out there cross your fingers nothing sparks up while...
This is probably common for other folks too, but I’ve had some of my most productive, scouted spots for that season burn up right before opener that year.
This is something I’m concerned about as well. I have a few spots that are looking good at the moment but could change prior to season...
Hunted West Yellowstone and put I in a lot of days. No opportunities. Tried a lot of areas. Cross country skied to get access to different sections. Saw one bull that got harvested by another hunter. This is a unique hunt. It’s more of a harvest if the animals come out than a hunt.
Got eyes on some bears. More work to do from here. There is a fair amount of time between now and season so will need to keep an eye on what food sources may shift between now and then. Will be heading out for archery so will need to be keyed in on food when that starts.
I've been up a little higher than you which is why I think I haven't been seeing too many bears 😂
At least where I have been looking, the streams are running and there are plenty of them. It seems like there is enough snow to keep them going, but I could be wrong.
I'm more excited about bear...
I'm focused on higher elevation and so it is not very dry up there right now. I don't think it will be dry at the start of the season either. I have some lower elevation spots I'm thinking about if these higher elevations are not productive. At the moment, they have not been too productive. I...
I’m with you on this. Modern equipment is powerful. I’m shooting 510gr and if it’s well placed it’s no question. I’m not too interested in tinkering with the setup this time of year.
Do you have any recommendations on breaking down the BTX? I run an Exo 4800 and when the BTX 85mm combo is used and in one piece, it has to go in the main compartment. If I break it down the lens could run down the side and the eye piece could go in the main compartment. what do you do to keep...
Thanks for all the insights- getting above it / going with the low tripod was helpful, hiked it up a hill to test those out and had decent results. Tried it with a Boulder/zrest and with a lightweight chair and both worked pretty well.
What are your solutions for using the Swarovski BTX when you’re up higher on a glassing knob and need to look down? The BTX is angled and it rotates, but since it has 2 eyes, rotating the spotter doesn’t work the same as if it was a single eye angled spotter. The BTX is nice, though heavy and I...
