    Fly fishing mountain lakes

I add powdered butter to freeze dried meals sometimes to get some more calories. Havent cooked fish with it before. Wooly buggers, hoppers, a few nymphs for me.

Who's sleeping 2 guys in a traditionally sized 2p tent?

I want a tent to myself regardless of how big it is.

    Early season elk strategies

That was me last weekend. Running around sounding like a herd of elk when I heard a cow call. Got into a little herd but couldn't find a way to get close enough.

    Early season elk strategies

Here in Utah we've had a lot of rain all summer so there's water all over. Makes me think that hunting a watering hole won't be too useful. The areas I hunt have too many trees to spot and stalk, and usually too much underbrush to still hunt. Are there any other ways?

    What caliber for Cow Elk?

Killed a cow elk w/ a 6.5 cm. Given the lack of ammo availability last year, I ended up shooting target ammo. Dont remember the exact bullet but it didn't petal at all. One double lung shot, no meat wasted, dead elk. In the future ill be using better bullets but it worked out well that time.

    arrows for TAC

Is it worth buying cheap arrows for TAC? Last year was my first year and I somehow managed to only lose 1 arrow, but I was shooting the closest course and didn't take many shots over 30 yards. Just curious to hear if anyone else buys cheap arrows they dont care about losing for these events...

    Kuiu Summit Refuge 3

No you can’t. I guess with the kuiu stove jack you might be able to fit it in there, but I’d be worried about the mesh melting with the sparks or the wind coming under the tent and blowing the mesh into the stove. And if you sew in a jack, depending on where you put it, you’d need to sew a jack...

    Base camp elk setup

Looking for a good basecamp setup for elk and backcountry skiing. I want a stove, I ideally want to be able to carry it on my back if I need to and I think im looking for space for up to 4 people, without being excessive for just one person. A canvas wall tent seems too heavy to carry in without...

Building a Complete Sleep System for Southern NM

You could get a light quilt or bag and puffy jacket and pants. That's what i've been doing lately. 4.2 R pad, 30 degree quilt, puffy pants and jacket. Worked fine on a night in the high 20s low 30s, i'd want a warmer quilt for anything colder.

2P Tent or Tarp and Bivy

Tarp if there's no bugs or you're immune to mosquitos, 2p w/ bug netting if there's bugs. IMO I would only bring a bivy instead of a tent if I didn't think it was going to rain, and if I didn't think it was going to rain then why would I bring a bivy? I guess you could skip the tent and bring an...

    Kuiu Summit Refuge 3

I have it, I absolutely love it. I've used it a ton, its pretty much my do-it-all tent. Things to bear in mind: the plastic stove jack that Kuiu sells melted so I had to sew in a stove jack. Seems like this isn't uncommon. I have a friend whos kuiu stove jack hasn't melted yet though, so its not...

    Rooftop tent on a trailer

So i have a rooftop tent I got with my truck. I used it for a weekend and would have loved it if it weren't for the fact that you cant really move your car while the tent is pitched. I've seen people put a rooftop tent on a trailer, seems like that'd be great. I'd weld it myself, i'd want a...

    Elk 101 or Elk collective?

I did elk101. Glad I did. Very archery rut/calling oriented. I def agree that theres only one way to get experience, but it helped for sure.

    Utah youth any bull

Congrats on the tag. I got it a few years ago, unsuccessful but super fun hunt. sled, thats correct I think (assuming it hasn't changed in 2 years) it's a rifle hunt on all the general elk units, immediately after the archery season. Any elk. South slope is a good bet I think, def has the...

    Integrated pad/bag

Has anyone tried sewing or somehow attaching a quilt/sleeping bag to a sleeping pad? Seems like that would save weight and eliminate possible drafts with using a quilt. Maybe a zipper around three sides of the pad that zips the bag to the pad. Seems like the best of both worlds between a bag...
