Was looking for a Viper PST Gen ll and found one for around $600 new. That is more my $$ range. But came across your post and I can swing $1000 if your interested.
Sorry, I should have said slightly better "BC" than "accuracy" with the longer heavy bullets. My bad. I am in the dilemma of factory rifle in 300 WSM vs custom 300 WSM or factory 300 PRC. I intend to to really only be shooting loads like 225gr or heavier and seems like it will be cheaper to...
With the custom build the gunsmith can accommodate the set up for longer heavier bullets so it really isn't something to worry about. I plan on going with a factory build and the PRC is designed from the ground up to take the longer heavier bullets for things like head height and free bore...
Was just at the store comparing a carbon model over the aluminum. Hefting them and setting them up. Carbon is nice but was $200 more. For about a 1lb your paying about $200. Not sure if I can swallow that. I'll just make my kids carry the aluminum one! :D
I should have explained my needs more which the PRC would fulfill a little nicer than the traditional 300 WSM. Using it for ELR shooting and double to hunt with. The long heavy bullets just work better for that or makes it "easier" because of the physics. I haven't reloaded them but looking...
My brother is putting together some of these. He plans on handing me a box to try out. It is a nice trade, I give him my used brass and he gives me some hand loads to test out. Interested to see how these do compared to the ELD 147's.
Was looking at a 300 WSM but have decided to go with the 300 PRC. There is no denying that it is just overall a nicer setup avoiding some of the pitfalls of the 300 WSM, especially if you reload. The only issue may be that ammo is not as abundant on the shelf if you were in a bind for some...
Shot placement is going to be important when starting to reach out that far. I practice in different conditions and chart my results so I know can have the best chance of knowing my dope and where that bullet is going to hit.
I will second what wakedye has said. I like a shooting off a pack if possible. Or if you need to be higher a tripod set up. Then you gotta practice using it and being quick with getting into position.
Just wondering how this build ended up. I am putting together a 300 PRC build and probably looking at 11lbs. In part it will also be used for a long range target gun. But I want the ability to take 500-600 yard shots with out much worry. Was also thinking of the SWFA 5-20x50 HD scope.
If I was just using my pack as a rest, I don't think I would spend the money on one. I made my own pad with some bean bag foam. It is feather weight and didn't cost hardly a thing and allows the stock to create its groove.
I have had that experience with a heavy pack. I had to tighten up the waist belt a little to keep it from getting g to low, Must have either been putting pressure on nerves or circulation.
