I used to follow this until I asked Mel Forbes what to do on my NULA. He told me it doesn't matter much, which is what I've found to be true. When you've got a tightly bedded rifle, the rifle just can't shift much in the stock and there's not much need to torque hard.
I just torque firmly with...
The reason I bought my first 7mm-08 actually. I was interested in a Howa Alpine Mtn, which was made with a 20" barrel. The choice for me came down to either 6.5CM or 7mm-08 and I felt the 7mm-08 edged out 6.5CM in efficiency in a shorter barrel like this one. Probably a nit, but that was my...
Initially I was worried 7mm-08 might be in decline and might someday be obsolete. I'm a big fan of it, not because it's anything high performance or does anything particularly well. It's just an efficient, compact round, packs enough punch for anything non-dangerous, not too much blast or...
Thanks for the info, it's nice to hear how you configured yours and how the weight came out. I mostly use puffy pants for staying warm while glassing but have occasionally crawled through snow to stalk in closer during winter hunting.
I've got some other puffy clothing made of Pertex - seems...
I recently built a big cooler out of 2" thick styrofoam insulation and fiberglass. I may redo it for a few reasons but one thing I did with the scraps I had left over was build an inner cooler, which fits inside the main cooler.
The inner cooler is made of 2 layers of 2" insulation, which...
I've been using a caldera cone Ti sidewinder for the past few years and it's been working well for me. I have this one, the cone and pot together weigh about 5 oz, then another 1oz or so for the stove.
The main downsides to using an alcohol stove are that it can take a long time for the burner...

Up until this year I've been using a Sirui T-024SK but have found it to be a bit fiddly. The smallest way to fold it up is to extend the center column all the way up, the fold the legs up to match. Then setup involves...
Yeah I think you've confused Forbes with CLR, which are less desirable. They were basically a model 28 with an injection molded stock, bolt components had issues and the trigger wasn't great. Melvin would do a conversion, adding his stock, trigger and making changes to the bolt.
Did you find throat geometry to better in Fieldcraft than ULA/NULA?
Mel would use whatever twist the customer asked for but of course had his sort of go-to twists for various chamberings. I would say he tended to lean toward faster twist but may have settled on his general recommendations some...
I had a Howa Alpine that I liked quite a bit but then after buying a Fieldcraft there was no going back. That's not to disparage the Alpine it's just that a Fieldcraft is that much nicer.
