    Colorado otc unit options

Haven’t hunted any of those but spent the last 5 days hiking 70 miles around 14 and saw only 4 elk little fresh sign. I’m going to go check out the 11,22,21 area but I’ve never been in that area and it’s going to be hot so I’m not sure what elk numbers if any will be there I’m thinking those...

    CO Orange Law

Not needed if you’re archery. Although I’m gonna bring some and put on the pack this year. Had a muzzleloaders go off under 200 yds from me last season in CO…and that was a little to close for comfort ha.

    CO Elk hunt

I did the same thing last year scouted an area doing a 20 mile loop and it was so steep and full of blow down it would have been impossible to get an animal out by myself and I said I’m never coming back here lol. Went to a much easier area to move around in and more manageable and was able to...

Bumping elk, will they come back?

Being my second year hunting and solo if there’s anyone in Colorado I may not be opposed to bringing someone with me. I feel pretty confident if there were 2 people last season an elk would we been killed.

Bumping elk, will they come back?

I’m pretty certain it’s the area they spend sept as it’s the same spot where I had multiple encounters last season. That’s good to hear. As of now I’m trying to formulate my plan for opening morning and how I want to approach it. Every time I’ve bumped an elk in the area they always run the...

Bumping elk, will they come back?

After I bumped them I just left the area and am going to leave it alone till opening morning. I don’t think the area gets a lot of foot traffic. I’ve never encountered another person in the area off season and only ran into 1 hunter on 1 day about a 1/2 mile from the area or so all last season...

Bumping elk, will they come back?

It was on public land. National forest. The area doesn’t see a lot of foot traffic which is one reason I really like the area. I’ve never seen more then a few cars at the trailhead even during season. The herd was literally on top of a waypoint from last season where I called in a bull on...

Bumping elk, will they come back?

I’m guessing they were in bed. It was in the timber around 1-2pm and I didn’t hear anything before I bumped them so I don’t think they were up milling around really. It was literally on top of a waypoint from last season where I called a bull in which is why I was there checking it out in the...

Bumping elk, will they come back?

So I was out scouting yesterday Aug 12th season opens here on sept 2nd. Last year was my first year ever hunting I had some good encounters got close but never quite got the opportunity to let an arrow fly. In my spot I never encountered more then some lone bulls and 2/3 cows together at a time...

    Summer Scouting

I had a few encounters in one spot last September and got very close to being able to let an arrow go. So I think I might go back to that area and look for sign that they’re still using it, there was also a fire last sept in the area so I think I’ll go check that area out and see what it looks...

    Summer Scouting

This will be my 2nd fall elk hunting or hunting at all for that matter. Last year I didn’t get a chance to really do much pre season scouting. Pretty much one day trip. I did a lot of e scouting but This year should allow for multiple trips to scout. I plan to hunt the same area I did last year...

How do I kill this dang bull!!!

Well guys a little update, I was out for the last few days hunting the same area. The day before yesterday I was on 5 cows and 1 spike which I called in the same area id been running into the bull I’ve been trying to get but unfortunately it’s not legal to shoot him. I’d have no problem taking a...

New elk hunter with plans changed

I second what others have said about the sawyer just keep it from freezing and it’s awesome. When I’m in cold temps with me I just keep it in a inner jacket or shirt pocket so my body warmth keeps it above freezing.

    Advice on This Year's Hunt - Unit 18 - Do I cancel?

I’d say go solo as others have stated. Sounds like you’re putting in the work and prepared for it. Only way to get over any nervousness is to just face it head on that’s how I look it at. Also you could always camp at the vehicle even if it’s just with a tent at the trailhead there will almost...

    Guide to First Elk Hunt

I don’t have any info on guides, but if you’ve spent time in the mountains and are comfortable up there you can do it solo. I’ve never even hunted anything before until this elk season. I live in CO so I’m comfortable solo in the mountains, but I’m currently in the midst of my first hunting...

    Bugle report

Hunting northern Colorado, haven’t heard any unprovoked bugles but I’ve been able to get them bugling once I start calling the last two weeks, will be back out tuesday hopefully they’re talking by then.

    My first set of sheds

That’s what I was gonna say too, if you’re finding sheds while hunting my guess is you’re in their winter range which most likely would be hard to find any elk during archery.

    Colorado Unit 14 fire

I’ve gotten on a bull the 2 days I’ve hunted the unit, haven’t gotten a shot but been able to call him in twice I’m assuming it’s the same bull as it’s the same general area, walked past a cow at 30yds too. Also ran into a good amount of moose. This was all before temp drop and forest closure tho.

    MT vs. CO Dilemma

It’s otc so no just making him aware a new fire started and they closed down most of the National Forest that comprises unit 14, which is where I’ve been hunting the last two weeks unfortunately.

    MT vs. CO Dilemma

CO also has a good amount of fires. With a new one just starting Monday and essentially shutting down the whole of unit 14...with the forest closure
