MT draw unit, DIY, public land. First bow hunt in about 20 years. First archery elk hunt ever. Stalked him solo within 25 yards of his bed after all day spotting and stalking. Very pressured and educated elk. Had to make the shot as he ran straight out from his bedded position. I'm very thankful...
Not sure about the wild peaks, but now that you mention it the Colorado game and fish officer told me he loved the BFG TA KO2's on the half ton trucks, like i do, but he said that the 3/4 ton trucks chunked out the tires some on the rough rock trails.
Found this archery ballistics calculator. Kind of interesting and fun to play with. You have to play with the angle of departure to get the zero distance you want (about .78 for 25 yards depending). Kind of neat to see how different changes affect the trajectory.

Hello and Welcome Glyn. Like you, I've been lurking and appreciating the info on this sight for a couple years but just recently joined. Thanks for the compliments, I will pass them on. Best wishes.
Yeah, that is probably right about the polymer tip. I think I read on here somewhere before that with the Tikka's, you can use a mag for a different cartridge, maybe a 7-rem mag magazine, or 300 win-mag magazine, and use it with the 270 WSM to gain extra OAL with your 270 WSM loads. I'll have to...
I love the BFG TA KO2's. They are snow/ice rated and tough as nails. I used to get side wall slashes and punctures all the time until I switched to the KO2's. I haven't got a sidewall slash since (6 years now). During elk season and extra trail and two track hours, I deflate them down to 21...
Thanks for the info so far everybody. I believe my shoulder is ok, I'll find out soon. Sounds like 450 - 550 grain arrow weight and of course super sharp, strong broadheads. I am going to try to go to the nearest proshop/indoor range Wednesday and try some different bows.
Thank you 5milesback. I have all girls and they are my hunting buddies as well. The time we spend in the outdoors together make up most of my best memories.
GotDraw, I agree with you and that is exactly the follow up conversation we had. Ready the gun and be prepared to defend first, then if safe to do so, grab the camera. Some of us are from the grab your gun generation and some of the younger ones are from the grab your phone generation. My family...
They said they couldn't let us keep it, that it was state property. I'm sure they don't want to encourage people to shoot the lions be letting people keep them either.
Thank you. Yes they did. It was facing her almost straight on, only slightly quartering to her right. She hit it in and out of the left shoulder. She had a hard time seeing anything but fur in the scope and I know she could not have been too steady shooting off hand under the conditions. They...
I need a new bow and some advice. I've been out of bow hunting for 15 years. Only did eastern whitetail hunting back then. I plan on chasing elk with sticks and strings in Montana next year on a DIY hunt. I've hunted elk a good bit but never bow hunted elk before, fortunately I am going with an...
While loading for my daughters Tikka 270 WSM I was making the OAL close to the magazine length. When I made my next batch of ammo for her using the same Base to Ogive length, the finished rounds wouldn't fit in the magazine. After the first six rounds were made I had to open a new box of .277...
CPW did track down the cat. They said that it was healthy (before the shot), fit, strong, not starving, not sick and not protecting a kill. No real underlying reason for the aggressive behavior. She had not ever seen a mountain lion in person before, except maybe in a zoo when she was younger...
You guys are awesome! Thank you for all of the generous comments.
Another cool thing, during the excitement after the lion encounter, she forgot to stop by the truck and grab her backpack before coming down the steep canyon wall to find me at my half quartered elk and tell me about the...
