Welcome! I prefer archery but rifle would be easiest for your first time. I also recommend doing a couple test runs with all your gear before you go out. I'm a midwest whitetail hunter too and the backcountry is a whole different experience.
I have the InReach Mini. Definitely download the Earthmate App for easy texting. I use it with Gaia GPS on my phone and works good. I was a little disappointed in GPS reception as it will lose signal in clear sky sometimes for no reason. Also texts can sometimes take 10+ minutes to go...
Couldn't agree more with the "gym fit" vs "hill fit". No matter how in shape you think you are from the gym, it is a humbling experience the first time you go up a real mountain.
I have the Ken Onion one and its awesome. Highly recommend getting the blade grinder attachment for it. Much easier to use, get more consistent results, and less likely to round the tip on your knife.
Also, practice on old crappy knives before sharpening any of your nice expensive ones.
I've had the JetBoil Flash for the past two years and it has been flawless. With that said, thinking of switching to MSR Pocket Rocket and titanium pot to save space and weight.
