    Are the books worth it?

You might check to see if your local library can borrow books voa inter library loan. I used to buy every hunting book that I could find, but I prefer now to read first and buy later if I find that it’s one that I will want to refer back to.

    Lightest camp shoe?

The lightest option other than no-camp-shoes is a pair of grocery produce bags. Put on a pair of dry socks when in camp, cover them with the bags, and then put your shoes/boots back on. Not the most comfortable, but not carrying an extra 1/2-1 pound and bulk of "camp shoes" can add comfort as...

Tyvek vs... what to protect groundpad from sharps/wet ground?

I've bought polycryo as window or patio-door insulation kits from Amazon or Walmart. I believe that the larger door insulation kits may actually use a thicker gauge polycryo, if you're concerned about puncture resistance. The stuff is pretty durable for the extremely light weight and...

    Backcountry chair

I have the Helinox Ground Chair, which I bought in 2016 before the lighter Chair Zero was introduced. The Ground Chair has a unique base that helps prevent sinking into the soil. I'm fundamentally opposed to carrying the weight/bulk of a chair while backpacking, but after a shakedown hike with...

    Groundsheet?

I have not used it, but Ron Bell at Mountain Laurel Designs sells a DCF Ground Cloth that is designed more as a ground sheet, but he says it can be used as an emergency tarp. DCF/"Cuben Fiber" is very pricey for a ground sheet, but MLD's gear is great.

Quilts. Good, bad, and which one

I have lots of nights in a Katabatic Gear Palisade 30-degree Wide quilt. It packs very compactly in a Z-Packs DCF dry bag. I'm a cold sleeper and have found that a warmer pad is a bigger deal that managing drafts, even though I shift from side to back to side multiple times in the night. I...
