    Ideal Bear Defense Long Gun?

You'll do better with the types of slugs you'd want for serious bear defense with a smooth bore. If you want to pack in a few buckshot rounds along with them, even more so.

    Ideal Bear Defense Long Gun?

Old thread. But I'll contribute anyway. IMO, the very best shotgun available for bear defense is going to be a Mossberg 500 or 590 with an extended magazine and bead front sight. I think it beats any and every other shotgun for bear defense. Why? 1) It has a one piece bolt, non-rotating...

    Virginia public land.

The hound hunting for deer and the disrepectful hunt clubs have gotten out of hand in eastern Va. I've been hunting east of Richmond since the mid 70s. Particularly in Charles City and New Kent Counties. Dealing with hunt clubs and their dogs, and lack of respect for other hunters and private...

    Traditions Buckstalker vs CVA Wolf

1.5lbs is too light for a hunting rifle. Is it adjustable? I had a Ruger GSR that came with a trigger that broke well under 2 lbs. It was like a permanent hair trigger.

    Issues with buckstalker northwest magnum

I have a Traditions Pursuit NW Magnum XT. If you are using any recently manufactured CCI musket caps, then you are using their "reenactor" caps., also labeled "Multiple Use." These are very, very weak caps. I have a hard time lighting any BP substitutes with them. Schuetzen musket caps, on...

    209 Primers Handling Pressure?

Cheddites are reliable primers, but they are easily pierced. I'm using them in a Traditions Pursuit NW XT with a 209 conversion breech plug, breech face and firing pin. Every shot with the pin pierces the primer. I have to use the 209 breech plug with the musket cap breech face and pin to not...

Slug hunters: Savage 212, more accurate than some of my rifles

Good tip. Thanks. Weird thing is, I've only had feeding issues with the Hornadys. Any other brand, whether 2.75 inch or 3 inch, feeds and cycles fine.

Slug hunters: Savage 212, more accurate than some of my rifles

I live in eastern Virginia and the areas I hunt most frequently are shotgun only. A little farther west, and riles are allowed. But nearer my home its a shotgun-only affair. I sometimes hunt with smooth bores and foster slugs, which can actually be very accurate. They're killers, too.. But...

Browning BLR - what are your thoughts?

I have a BLR Lightweight '81 in .308. It will shoot a sub 2" group at 100 yards. The trigger pull isn't as good as most of my bolt actions, but I've learned to live with it. I have a Leupold FXII Ultralight 2.5X on mine. With sling, it tips the scales at a bit over 7 lbs. I'm sure it would...

X Bolt HC Rail and Rings??

Then they would work with the Warne Maxima bases. Warne Maxima bases are weaver style.

X Bolt HC Rail and Rings??

The answer is a definite maybe. Generally, weaver style rings will work on either Weaver or Picatinny bases. Picatinny rings work on picatinny bases, and maybe weaver bases. The picatinny slots are wider than weaver slots. If the recoil lug on the picatinny rings fit the slot on the weaver...

X Bolt HC Rail and Rings??

Browning doesn't publish it but if you call them they'll tell you. I called them for torque specs on my BLR Lightweights and also asked about the X-Bolt. On the X-Bolt, torque is not to exceed 18 inch pounds. 15 inch pounds is entirely adequate with aluminum bases.

X Bolt HC Rail and Rings??

Yes. You can turn both front and rear end for end, which is useful if you have to accomodate a short scope. Both of the rifles pictured are, obviously, long action. The scope on the .30-06 is shorter than the scope on the .270. I originally had the scope on the .30-06 and the scope on the...

    Need ammo advice for 308

Remington Core Lokts, Federal Power Shok and Winchester Power Point are fine. These rounds have probably accounted for more deer, elk and black bear than all other rounds combined. I've used 150 on deer and black bear and never had any problems with them. My M70 Featherweight is a MOA gun...

X Bolt HC Rail and Rings??

I'd switch the base to Warne steel Maxima bases. They are much lower. I use then on my X-Bolt .30-06. The little bit of overhang over the ejection port has zero effect on function and was necessary for me to span the long action ejection port with a short scope. and my X-Bolt .270:

Is classic hunting bolt action rifle dead or?

An inaccurate 700 CDL is usually due to a super inaccurate shooter.

Is classic hunting bolt action rifle dead or?

The real innovation in the last 30 year or so is weight reduction. "Classic" guns can be heavy. I find myself gravitating to my lighter guns for the vast majority of my hunting. I'm less concerned about hunting with a wood and blued gun than I am about lugging a heavy rifle up and down...

Is classic hunting bolt action rifle dead or?

And that's fine. And actually, I care for my blued gun no differently than I care for a stainless gun. I care for my guns after use whether they are blued or stainless. I never found that wiping down a gun with a pre-oiled cloth, or running a patch down the bore of a blued (or stainless) gun...

Is classic hunting bolt action rifle dead or?

I must be missing something. I've hunted with blued and wood guns for more than 40 years, on clear days and raining days, and never had one rust. In fact, I've never had one rust anywhere that wasn't due to a lack of care afterwards. My grandfather and father always preached, clean your gun...
