Marsh stools are the way to go, I use a decoy cart and a jet sled for the most part. Sometimes I use I dry bag back pack if I plan on going far or light. Because yolo is so big you may have to do some walking before you find a spot you like, so a back pack with 4-6 decoys is what I would do...
If you go 300 wsm I'd lean for the 22 inch barrel. But I've seen quite a few threads here and other places about 18-20 in short mags lately. I'm going to rebarrel my 300 win to a 300 wsm soon with a 22 inch barrel.
I'm going to say either 300 wsm or 284 Winchester, both will excel on long actions. I'd build the 300 around a 210 grain ish bullet or the 284 around a 175 or 180. Feeding won't be a issue with either and mag length won't be a issue.
I'd buy it, In my area lapua brass is always available for it and you have the option of srp or lrp brass. Depending on your primer situation or your hunting temperatures. Tons of bullet and powder options for that thing which is a plus to me, I'm not happy unless I'm tinkering with something.
H4350 would be good, or something else in that burn range. I think the 4350 would be more temp stable than others. H4831 might be a little slow for the 117 but I would try it if you have it.
Used a 308 win with the 137 hammer this year, took out the top of the heart and some lungs. Performance was good and left about a 2 inch exit. Buck made it maybe 15 yards after the shot.
I buy extended chokes for the ease of switching and muzzle protection. You don’t need aftermarket chokes unless the patterns aren’t good with factory. Carlsons do the job but their cheap and patterns are just ok, personally I think Briley and patternmaster make the best patterning chokes. If...
My loads are usually 10-30 thou off or saami length. I found nosler likes saami factory length, Berger’s and hornady eldx/eldm like 10k off, and hammers like 20k off. Just what works for me I usually can switch powder or adjust the charge a little and this works.
Get a 20 gauge, I mostly switched to one 2 years ago. Everything from upland to geese. No difference other than less shot. A bird you would get with a 12 but not a 20 is probably just wounded anyway. Steel 6s for small upland works good or 3 inch 3s for ducks. Geese I use 2s or bismuth 2s if...
Has anyone tried the ballistic tip lead free? Curious about your on game performance. I searched online and can’t really find much. Just picked up 200 of the 50 grain for my 223. If not I don’t mind being the Guinea pig and will report back.
For a handloader it’s a amazing cartridge, realistic bullet weights from 130-180 grain with velocity from 2600 to 3100 FPS. I don’t know what’s not to like. Coyotes and elk out to 500 yards no problem.
As a lifelong ca resident, I hunt here every year and go out of state every few years. There are plenty of deer to be killed here in archery or rifle. Yeah you have to put in a lot of effort to find the deer but when you do your golden. 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the deer is a realistic saying.
