Hi All- was lucky to draw the second season rifle tag in the hybrid draw with 6 points. I am familiar with the north part of the unit but curious if folks have any experience or thoughts on the south half specifically in the cold springs WSA. I will be scouting multiple weekends in the coming...
I’ve done high elevation September deer rifle hunts the last 3 years. They are on public land either in wilderness areas or above a certain elevation. Definitely not a PLO tag. They way CPW lumps certain seasons and units in its reporting makes it confusing in some cases because there are early...
Hi All,
I picked up this tag off the leftover list yesterday. I will be scouting the unit in two weekends. I have experience hunting these September rifle high elevation deer units in Colorado but I haven’t hunted this specific unit yet. If anyone has hunted 471 in the last few years and has any...
Hi McCrapper- I just picked up the tag off the leftover list today. I will be scouting in a week or two. Anything you’d be willing to share or lessons learned about your hunt would be great! I also don’t see the pic of your buck in this thread anymore. Would love to see it. Thanks!
My advice after going on a few high elevation/wilderness September deer rifle hunts Colorado, is this- most of these areas don’t hold big bucks in high alpine basins like you dream of. In reality by the time mid September roles around the bucks have rubbed and heavy frost or dry alpine...
If you are in shape and looking for tough but rewarding hunt- look at unit 74 early deer rifle. Starts in early September before muzzleloader season. Deer will be in high alpine basins still in velvet. You will make memories to last a lifetime
I just picked up the 471 early deer tag on the leftover list. I will be scouting later in August. If you would be willing to share any of your experience from last year it would appreciated. Best of luck on future hunts
For early season scouting I use the seek Eolus with the nest. For early season hunting I remove the nest. For Mid to late season I use the seek Redcliff with the large ultralight stove. All options are lightweight and packable in your pack.
Thanks Downthepipe, that’s great feedback. I’ve run into the same conditions down here in Colorado with the early deer rifle hunts. There’s very few areas where the deer are still in high alpine basins come September.
Best of luck to you on your hunts this year.
Hi All,
Putting in for this controlled hunt for 2022. Curious if anyone has had this tag In the last couple years and has any feedback on how their experience was? I am an experienced high country deer hunter in Colorado. I plan to scout and hunt the east side of the unit in the sawtooth...
Awesome country. Lots of non hunting hiking recreation especially near independence pass and the vail eagle side. The last few years bucks have been out of the alpine basins and into the timber by the second week of September. There are better archery deer units imo. Best of luck
I had an early season wilderness deer rifle tag this past September. I started the hunt at 12,000’ and spent 3 days glassing and checking basins. After seeing very few deer I moved down below 10,000’ and immediately began seeing deer all over. I saw 6 bucks on day 4, and 8 bucks on day 5 which...
