There is very little hunting going on in 39 in September. I’m not sure what people are talking about. Lots of people camping, etc, but not in remote areas. Lots of elk, lots of rutting. Should be a great time. Good luck!
I love that they finally got on the hip vent train. However, vents or not, a double layer nylon/merino pant is likely a no-go for me in September. Way too warm, I’m guessing. I overheat in the Ascents on some openers.
I shot mine two weeks ago at 8:05 am. Two other bears I’d seen the night before were visible from first light. One hadn’t moved 30 yards from where I’d seen him the night before.
Finally got out last weekend after the season had been open nearly a month. Found a decent cinnamon bear and two smaller chocolates. The 6.5 PRC did great work. Recovery/packout were serious work, but all rewarding in the end. Bears were all at 4400. Green up had begun, but not extensive. Deer...
I hunt almost exclusively with camp on my back. Reading everything lately, I guess it’s not cool, anymore. I love hunting dark to dark, and never worrying about where I am, or getting “back to camp.” I’ve done a bunch of planned 8-10 day hunts. Hopefully, I kill something before it gets to that...
Congrats! That’s a heck of a first bull. I have a few identical to that on the wall, so my guess is 275-280. It takes a lot more than some guys think to hit 300.
Last weekend. 6 point was hard-horned. Tough to see, I got good video, but the other bull has huge, bloody strips of velvet hanging off his bases. I have a video of these two bulls a month ago. It looked like the brawl of the century, except they never actually touched. Gotta protect that velvet!
I’ve done 2, 10 day hunts in the 44. This was September, and I have compact, ultralight gear. I also don’t pack tripod or spotter for elk, so that changes things. I think you can do 5-7 days, no problem, with very average food/gear/clothing choices. Amazing pack. Near-perfect layout.
I ran into 11 guys total on the mountain in three days in 39. 8 of the 11 were from Washington. So no, didn’t notice much of a difference. I’m sure there were less, just wasn’t my experience.
Not sure, there. That archery hunt is antlered only. You can't apply for an antlered hunt the year after drawing. Maybe a bull tag and a cow tag...? Either way, stupid draw odds!
