Glock 19 + Hard Cast Experiences

Just picked up a G19 Gen4 that will sometimes be for my wife to carry in the woods. We live and camp in grizzly country all year but realistically it's as much for protection against 2 legged predators and cats, we have 3 little kids and we see more cats than griz anyways. I run Buffalo Bore...

My fellow upland bird hunters in Idaho, how are things going?

Went for grouse once, of course didn’t see any. Went elk hunting and wasted two $20 arrows for one grouse, saw over a dozen but had decided I wasn’t going to shoot anymore. When I’ve been around water I’m seeing lots of grouse figuring with the coming rains they’ll be more spread out and moving...

    Thoughts on BaseMap?

I use Gaia, basemap and onX and like them in that order while in the field. I have just been let down by bug issues with onX too many times to trust it in the field any more. OnX is really great when hunting public/private interface areas but beyond that I just find it lacking. The 3D view in...

Any big guys use a double pad, alone?

The x therm max is 24” wide while I think most all others are 20” wide. Personally think the x therm is one of the best pads out there. May be worth a try and save you some weight before going for a double.

    So who actually eats bear?

Bear shanks Chile Verde style is one of the best shank recipes i’ve ever done. Made some epic tacos and saved all the broth and some meat to make posole. Had a hard time convincing anyone it was game meat. Low and slow preparations are great to ensure thorough cooking and saving all the tough...

I think I’m going to grind it in with some breakfast sausage haha. The controlled hunt season is closed now.

    ID Bear Success

Despite having a controlled hunt tag in my pocket, I decided one morning last week to try for a bear close to home. After putting in 4.5 miles and a lot of elevation to get to a great glassing point, I hadn’t seen much sign and none fresh in the area heading in and no bears out moving after a...

Drew ID Unit 32 Spring Bear!

Thanks customweld. To me that explanation makes a lot of sense. Even still I’m game to show up and help scare the bears back north into 32a. But what you bring up is what gave me pause in applying and why I was hoping to chat with the bio.

Drew ID Unit 32 Spring Bear!

Now what? Always put in for this hunt when it was combined with 32a but this year they split them and there were a lot more tags for 32 so figured I'd go for it. I'm familiar with 32a but not so much with 32. Put in a couple calls to the biologist over the past month trying to make sure it...

Great pieces from non hunting brands

Patagonia nano air and nano air light are awesome. I run hot and own a Kuiu Kenai which is similar but it’s too much for me for an “active” insulation layer. Can’t imagine how hot the Kuiu Kenai pro is. Similarly the oft praised Patagonia R1 is too hot for me but the capilene 4 is a nice grid...

    Off highway vehicles Idaho

Not legal if it’s a unit with a motorized hunt rule, which is easy to find out. If it does have a MHR you can ride a dirt bike or atv but only on roads open to full size vehicles. Either way have a way to check the USFS motor vehicle use map, OnX, Gaia or Avenza as the MVUM is what wardens go...

    Best wild game meat

My wife always says if deer were made out of duck meat she’d be a lot more excited about my deer hunting. That said, it’s all in how you prepare and cook it but if beef is your thing then you can’t beat elk. I personally love some gamey old buck meat or some antelope.

WA proposed bear season changes. support needed!

If I read correct I think they were meeting on this late last week. Any idea what the outcome was or when we could expect to hear? Thanks for posting this up, would be a great change to see them make. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Hunting vehicle other than pickup??

You really need to do a cost benefit analysis and I think it will quickly become clear that keeping your truck probably continues to make sense. I seriously looked at a small diesel sedan for long trips after I realized all my trips this past year could have been easily pulled off with a small...

AK Spring Bear Spot and Stalk Trip Planning

Now that my fall hunts are all wrapped up I'm already scheming for next year. I've been wanting to hunt alaska for a number of years and have been building up a ton of miles on my Alaska Airlines CC in anticipation of that. Trouble is chasing mule deer in August and September with my bow is my...

    Painting

Have used the Rothco coyote brown spray paint on a few items, mainly super shiny tripod legs (Like the KDC that's super shiny black aluminum), about as durable as I'd expect spray paint to be. Also did good spray and prep on most items on my superlightweight AR that I built and that has all...
