Piecing together a new build and thinking of going short.

I, like so many, need a new gun like a hole in the head but I miss my .308 bolt gun. I sold it a while ago to invest in a top notch AR-10. I'm building off the Gunwerks GRB Action and plan to use Proof Carbon as my barrel choice. I'm really leaning toward a 16.5" barrel and run the gun suppressed 99.9% of the time. Assuming the FPS is the same as I have chronoed out of the AR-10 (Hornady 178 gr ELD-X at 2450) I should be looking at a 700-750 yard gun for bullet expansion.

This gun would serve as a meat stick and upgrade for my 9yr old.

Here is the build list I'm thinking of so far:

Gunwerks GRB Action
Gunwerks Clymer Carbon Stock
Wyatt Style bottom metal with detachable mag
Trigger Tech Trigger
Proof Carbon 16.5" Sendero Lite
Leupold Mk 5 3.5-18x44
Atlas Bipod

What say you Sliders? It seems as though the venerable .308 has lost it's luster these days but it just plain kills what it hits...

Man I bought one of the new hipster cartridges, I still like the 308 short barrel bolt better.

I have yet to be begin to procrastinate.

I just had bolt .308 built on a 18.5” bbl for similar reasons. It would be foolish to argue the effectiveness of a .308 win! Personally though, I’m not at all a fan of AR platforms for hunting. Especially for kids.

I just ordered my first suppressor and was thinking the same thing.

Not interested in the custom route for a blind gun in Texas and am leaning towards this - https://www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-700/model-700-sps-tactical

I have a good hunting buddy that has that same remington and he also shoots it suppressed. For the price and what he intends to use it for, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better factory rifle in a similar configuration. It won't stack single hole groups, but with a little load development and learning the rifle it will shoot ten for ten in a pie plate out to 500 yards.

I have an 18" tikka 308....i love it except looking at numbers going with a 165/150 gn bullet I think you drop below 1000ft lbs of energy 500yrds

here is the trajectory/energy graph. I shoot 165 interlocks at 2633fps using 44.6gn of varget
I'm am just tiptoeing may way into longer range hunting and if I had to do it all over for 500 and under, I would go 270.
but I will admit a light short 308 is a beauty to carry all day! esp on a backpack. no snagging in over hanging branches etc.

also the muzzle blast is certainly more, and a bit more muzzle rise as well I found.

I have a kimber 308 cut to 18, but it's an older 12 twist. I'm planning a similar build off a 700 action that I have, so I can do a 10 twist and shoot up to the 181 hammer hunters. Debating between the clymr stock to match my win mag or save more weight and go with the proof stock.

Sounds like a good build.

I did a similar, but heavier, build on a M700 AAC-SD 16.5" .308 Win.

Can't wait to see it when you're done.
