I've had several friends tell me that I should get one of these for my winter snowshoeing/backpacking rifle.

What do you guys think of these and what would you go with?

Gonna go with the Savage for sure!

Why not a Savage markII in 22LR. Run sub sonic ammo and a suppressor? That's what I do and it is crazy quiet. Not as loud as a red rider BB gun.

But if going with one of the two you listed... 17HMR. Ammo is cheap, can find it almost every where and a good flat shooter.

I have a savage model 93 in 17hmr. Ammo is cheap and available and the rifle is a tac driver. That said , there has been a problem with extraction. On savage shooters they say to put a second c-clip on the extractor to tighten it up. If I had it to do over I would get the 22 mag instead. A little heavier bullet for coyotes and less sesitive to fouling. My hmr 17 opens up after adout 15 shots. If you shoot it much the cleaning becomes a pia. I would still get the savage again even with the extractor problem as it is very accurate.

I have shot everything from prairie dogs to yotes with my 17 HMR - It is one of those guns I don't think I will ever sell. Its accurate, fairly cheap to shoot and does not seem to ricochet like the 22LR or 22 Mag. I have the Marlin but if I was to do it over again I would have went the Savage route instead (already upgraded to a timney trigger and better stock). I too have extractor problems from time to time.
The only drawback to the .17 HMR is if there is much wind you get a lot of drift but what do you expect with a 17 gr bullet.

I completely agree with the posts above. The 17HMR is an awesome caliber. We shoot ground sqirrels in Oregon and the little 17 is flat out to 200 yards!

Ended up with a Savage 17 Hornet! I stuck a Vortex Viper HS 2.5x10x44 on it for a scope.

Heading out with the family this weekend to get it dialed in.

Looks like a jewell to me. I am sure it will shoot lights out as with my experience the savages shoot tiny little groups with those tiny little bullets. Could you have picked a bigger scope for the little bugger?!

I have a bad itch to get another one myself. Thanks for contributing to my bad habits.

Looks like the sun shade is on the scope, so really not as big as you think. Nice set up. You will like it.

I've realy been wanting one of those 17 Hornets. Just haven't found one around here yet. I already have a 17 HMR and 22 mag. The hornet just seems interesting to me...

I went to buy one tonight. They had two of them and sold the last one an hour before i got there. Wasn't too happy, but it is what it is.

The Hornet is shooting nickel sized groups at 100 yards!

I gave her a paint job tonight:)

I like this side better, so when the paint dries I'll repaint it like this.
