Thinking about building a short barreled 300 wsm or 30 Sherman max to run my suppressor on. Anyone have one built up with a short barrel? What velocities are you getting with 200+ grain bullets?

I'm going to follow along. I have everything I need minus my stock for a 20" 300 WSM build off a tikka action. IM wanting to shoot 200+ grain bullets as well.

Tag. In the exact same boat. I want to shoot 190-200 Gr bullets in a Defiance AntiX XM action (<3.200"). Also looking at the 300 WSM or 30 Sherman. Got an Ultra 7 on the way!

Been shooting a 22" 300 PRC for a while. Mild load getting 2880 with 215 bergers and 76.6 RL26 without pressure. Adg brass. Had it up to 3008 but gun became violent is how I describe it. Ultra 7 can. Proof carbon on anti x action. My barrel just arrived back from Altus (22" win mag throated long for the 190lrx) don't have any data sample yet but expecting over 3k with the 190s and possibly shooting the 200 accubond or the 205 eol berger. Well see what shoots best.

Buddy shoots a 20" win mag with 190lrx and 76.8 gr of RL26 right at 2970. And with 215gr bergers at 2828 fps with 76.1 gr of RL26. He uses black hills brass. His are bartlein barrels on GA precision builds. All single digit SDs.

I also shoot two custom Anti-x proof carbon 18" 6.5 PRC rifles with excellent results even with the heavier 156gr bergers.

Never going back to longer then 20 inch tubes in any hunting gun. Next 300 PRC barrel will be a 20" also.

That 300 PRC/Win Mag is an interesting idea. Seems like it would be brutal to shoot in a rifle that's going to weigh <6.5-7 lbs. Are you running a suppressor on your rifles? I haven't shot a lightweight rifle with a suppressor, how is the recoil MNTC?

I have an 6.5 SAUM with a 22" barrel and love it. Like you said, probably will never shoot a rifle over 20" anymore. They're the Sh*t!

I actually have another 28 nosler barrel for the rifle too at 24" but that's the longest hunting rifle barrel I own. So it's a 3 barrel rifle.

Yes I shoot an Ultra 5 and Ultra 7 on all my hunting guns. Typically I am not in the Ultra light camp. I am using a Carbon Manners EH1 with mini chassis and currently the scope is a Tangent Theta 3-15M. All in the rifle is 9 lb area with CIP mag and closer to 10 with a can. Also have a mini arca rail and a pic rail out on the forend. Just can never shoot super light magnums that well, especially at distance, that end up scoped in the 7 ish lb range. That's a really, really light setup and like you say, its not fun to shoot.

The recoil isn't bad at all until you really start pushing the pills hard. There is a definite line you cross when recoil increases. A muzzle brake by itself is better then both suppressed or with a bare muzzle. But the can is better then just a bare muzzle for sure.

I worry less about velocity these days and trying to max everything at its limit. I am going to also spin up a 10 twist 18-20" 300WSM barrel for the Anti X SA gun and shoot some 180 class pills. Key is getting the right powder for a complete burn in the short barrels. Otherwise your SD's and ES's are terrible.

I have a 22” proof carbon barrel chambered 300WSM on an AntiX short action. 212gr ELD-X handloads are traveling at 2,750 FPS. I could go faster. This is below Hornady book max but it is fast enough to still have 1,500 ft/lbs at 1,000 yards at 9,000 ft elevation. BTW, factory Hornady Elite Hunter 200 gr ELD-X go 2850 FPS in that barrel.

This is my primary hunting rifle since 2016. 300 Win Mag. This off season I had the barrel cut to 21.75 and threaded for a can. My go to load has always been a 180 grain Accubond. I am seeing 2960+- 10 with a brake(little faster with the can). Velocity was 3109 with the factory 24.65 barrel. Re-zeroed with the brake or thread protector this weekend. Shoots great both ways. Consistently up 2 moa and right 2moa with the can. Next week I'm hunting the big woods in Northern WI. I like the short length with the thread protector and still have the rifle I do most of my killing with.Tikka.jpeg
