Our regular pheasant season opens tomorrow. Had the resident public land only season last weekend. Took a short walk with the pup on a small piece of public near me and he did well gathering a mixed bag. Shaping up to be a great dog.

Took my two older boys out Sat afternoon. 3 Huns and 2 sharptail. Good time. I'm going to have to get a dog I guess.

The first two days for the pheasant season in WNY have been good. However, the rains and thunderstorms have been challenging though.

We kicked off SoDaks nonres opener on a high note last weekend. 3-man limit and a lot of good dog work by our two drahts. First bird hunt of the year as we’ve been too busy tracking deer.

Need to say that I'm getting hooked on following the Hobbes adventures...

Hey Nick Z: What do you guys think about while finding fall woodcock in snow? Is the ground still soft and/or do you think the birds got pushed into a pocket by the weather? Anyway, hope them little guys get a break in the weather and have enough gusto to fly south.

Yesterday's report
Drove 2 hours early Saturday morning with a plan to kill my two pheasants, then spend a few hours shooting steel targets, sleep in my truck and shoot 2 more phez Sun morning and head home.

First walk was a lengthy march around a long slough ditch. Parked my truck strategically to keep birds from running out at the home stretch. Went at least an hour without a track in 12" of snow...come around the final turn to find dog gone in cover and fresh phez tracks all over... Am all set cuz the truck is 100 feet away and my dog is somewhere near on point. Rooster one goes up and I dump him into the cattails. I don't dare rechamber my O/U while rooster after rooster gets up to fly right at the center mass of my truck. Never fired the second tube.

My dog is still gone so I snuck out on the snow-covered ice... After a hen flushes and I can hear my griff (Daisy) busting around, I break through up to my waist in Carhartt double-fronts. Finally climbed out of the cattails to find my Daisy with bird. While walking to the truck I contemplated two things; 1) how long I could continue in soaked pants and boots at 14F?, 2) what would #4 steel do to the Chevy's paint and glass at 100 feet? Decided I was in no hurry to figure out either.

FWIW, I do attend a lot of Sunday sermons on days I otherwise planned to hunt or fish. Another reminder that His plans and my plans don't always align.

We were actually shocked to find doodles in that snow. We must have hit the last day of migration through that area. Our first full day we had 30 flushes and 17 grouse flushes. Second day only 3 and 10 grouse flushes. All birds were found in young Aspen cuts but were held tight in pine clumps with exposed soft ground.

Heading to NE in a few weeks, usually SW area for Phez, but the pictures of the Sharpies has me thinking mixed bag. Are you guys mostly in North Central/Sandhills for the Sharptail? Great pics and dog work.

I shoot a dickinson estate sxs with 26 inch barrels. Me being a lefty ordered the gun with 1 trigger. I was in the market for a sxs that wouldn't break the bank and really liked the dickinson's. True case color hardening vs the chemical
(I have a franchi OU with the chemical that is 5 years old and wearing off already. Wood is very nice. Fit is great. My one gripe about the gun is finding different chokes for the gun has been a problem.

Decent quail numbers out in AZ so far this year. Temps are still pretty warm though, supposed to be back in the 90's next week. Heading out again this weekend to check some new spots.Capture1.JPGCapture.JPG
