I didn't draw an MT combo tag, so had to head to CO for OTC. Zoolorado lived up to its name. We got to the trail head a day before the season started, there were already four trucks parked. Hiked down a 2000 ft decent into a valley and had 40 elk spotted on a mountain, waited and watched to see what they would do, big mistake. Later that morning the mountain had five hunters running around using cow calls without a real plan, another gentleman was vaping, people were walking with the wind. Needless to say the mountain cleared out, and those 40 elk moved on. Another five people came into the valley the next day. Feeling like we were failing an IQ test staying, we packed out, passed another 8 people coming down the trail. Back at the rig, there were 15 trucks parked and four more trucks pulled in while we packed up. Brutal.

Being dedicated back country hunters, it was odd heading out to do front country hunting, but we kept it mobile. Found a wallow that was being hit, not 700 hundred yards from a major road. I had to drive my buddy to Denver so he could fly home, turned around and got back into the spot (three hours later). Proceeded to sit there for several hours, all of a sudden a decent for OTC CO (not huge, but decent) bull came in, and I was able to capitalize on a 40 yard shot and filled my tag 9/9.

Montana general tag. I heard exactly 6 bugles and my season was over. He’s (obviously) my biggest bull, but more proud I’ve killed 6 points three years in a row with my bow, all DIY public land on easy to get tags.

Hunted solo last Wednesday afternoon on our Colorado draw hunt. Bugled him in to 40 yards. Viper trick with a pass through. Lots of close encounters with 10 different legal bulls within shooting distance over the course of seven days. Was finally able to put it all together on day six.

Montana permit tag. Morning 7 of a planned 6 day hunt. Things were pretty slow for most of the week due to heat and drought conditions, bulls were still herded up for the most part. It wasn't until the last 24 hours of the hunt that some bulls started to break off and gather cows. Had a good opportunity on a big bull the night before, so headed back in the next morning and closed the deal on this guy. Not sure if it was the same bull or not, but very happy with him. Definitely my biggest bull so far.

Initial gross score 350 5/8" net 343" - Attached a video of him from the day before

I was hiking up late and taking the easy way when I bumped two of the bucks I was looking for. As they bounced down the ridge, this young bull came into view. I had taken a knee and he was coming right at me. At 25 yards he came out from behind a small tree and gave me a broadside shot. Then he did me another favor and ran towards the truck. My elk hunt was over before it ever began. Three days later I missed one of the bucks I had bumped previously, a decent four point.

E64AC028-4E4A-4C00-9BA1-F0DEEEE3D1FD.jpegI’ll put another one on for the girls lol. Had Several days left but I kept having cows blow out right before the bulls would step out so since I’d never got an got an elk yet I figured I’d better stop pushing my luck and take the bird in the hand.

Listened to him bugle around the wallow all afternoon before he came in and wollowed just under 30 yards. He finally walked in and laid in the wallow. Bugled and stood. Heart shot him and he ran 70 yards and dropped.

Third elk and third with a trad bow. Back to back to back.

That’s a Toyota Tacoma in the second pic. I haven’t scored him yet but he’s over 48” wide.
