204 Barrel Length

I’ve got a Rem 700 in 204 that shoots great. It has a 26” barrel and I’m wanting to put a can on it full time. It will likely never be shot without a suppressor. The suppressor is 8” total. How short should I cut it? I really don’t have any idea. I’ll be hunting day and night with it, probably under a thermal if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Barrels vary .I cut one to 24 from 26 for the same reason.Lost about 60 fps on my favorite load.Even with a short can(Trek)it's still seems pretty 'long'.In another 500 rds or so may cut it to 22.

I’d just bite the bullet and cut it down to 20-22”. At 20”, you’ll probably lose about 200fps. There’s a couple articles about velocity vs barrel length. Most of them tend to say not to go shorter than 20” because you start getting crazy muzzleblast. Which to me tells me you aren’t finished burning powder at that point.

I shoot a 20” .204 but without a suppressor. My handloads with 35 grain Berger’s are running about 3700 FPS and I’m under book max, if I remember correctly. If velocity is what you’re worried about, I think you’d be fine at 20”. 3700 whacks coyotes just fine!

I’ve had 204’s in 20, 22, and 24”. I wouldn’t have a 20” again, 22” would be the shortest I’d go, 24” preferred.

I’m thinking 23” to the end. My suppressor is 7.5” so that shouldn’t be the worst thing in the world!

To the end of... what? 23” with the 7.5” can is a 15.5” barrel, are you going to P&W a can mount or the can itself? Or are you talking 23” to end of barrel, so 30” assembled?
