I just picked up a 22-250 Ruger American and wanted to see if anyone has loaded heavy (75grain+) bullets with any success? The interwebs claim that it has a 1-10 twist in case that helps.

75 grain bullets will probably be a little to heavy for a 1:10. A lot of guys are hammering coyotes with 69 grain Sierra Tipped Match Kings. You should be able to stabilize those with your twist rate!

I have had gold luck with the 69smk’s. It will really depend on your rifle/elevation. I have seen them stabilize well at 100 and keyhole at 300. In general, I think the 22-250 is best suited for 50’ish grain bullets and use the heavier stuff in my .223’s.

I’m no expert in the caliber but it looks like you lose about 500 ft./s accross various powders bumping from the 69 gr to the 75. It would seem based on those numbers that the Increase in bullet weight would wipe out the high muzzle velocity advantage of the 22-250. Of course this doesn’t account for terminal performance, would love to hear a good counter argument if anyone has one.

I shoot the 69 TMK with Reloder 17. I'm right at 3400 fps. Works great for me. I have shot the Berger 70s as well.

I have been reloading 50 gr V-Max with Varget and CCI 200. 6 shot groups under a 1/2”. A fast round, but on the west side I’m not running through rounds predator hunting. Same, I’ve had better luck with heavier .223 loads.

Thanks for the info, my 35 Whelen loves varget but finding it was hard before the world decided to go crazy, I hadn’t bothered to look recently.
