So I am I currently running a savage 22-250 with a 26 in bull barrel which is really heavy, I’m thinking of cutting barrel down to 20 or 22 inches or buying a bolt action .243 and switch over to the .243 for coyotes. What would you guys recommend? 22-250vs.243 Thankyou guys

If your not worried about hides, then the 243 would fit your needs nicely. 87 grain vmax

I love my Tikka T3x 243. I had it cut back to 17” and threaded. I run a 9” suppressor. I shoot the 75gr Vmax hornady superformance at 3225fps. Bad medicine on the deer, coyotes, coons, and feral cats I’ve shot with it!

With the savage a quick barrel swap would be an easy and inexpensive garage project. You could grab one on eBay for $50-$250 depending what you want to get. Then you could always swap back or go up to a 308 if you want. The savage is a very versatile system in that regard.

My choice for coyotes would be the 22-250 and if I was interested in 6mm, I'd go with 6mm Creedmoor.

I've worn out a couple 243s and recently switched to Creedmoor. The ballistics are similar but reloading seems to be much friendlier and barrel life is claimed to be better.

I use the 6mm because of the chance that a wolf might respond.

If you're looking for a little push to justify a new purchase, wellll, you've come to the right place because we're always really good at helping people spend their money so you definitely have my vote towards a new 6mm Creedmoor purchase. :)

But, if you're happy with everything about your 22-250, except the weight and barrel length, I wouldn't think twice about having it chopped down to 18-22 inches. I run my 22-250 suppressed and had it chopped back from 24 to 18 and couldn't be happier. Just remember, when you have them cut back that short it makes them a fair bit louder.

I think if hides are a concern, you could find the right bullet for either rifle, the 22-250 is just made for coyotes though, any of those fast 22’s make a lot of sense

we have sold 583 coyotes in the round the last 7 years, and they have all been shot with either 222, 223, 224 Valkryie, 22-250 and 243. I can say for certain that all of these calibers can zipper a pelt if shot from the right angle, from a perfect mid body hit you cannot tell the difference between 22-250 & 243 and can barely see any difference in all the calibers. Shoot whatever gun you want and just get out their & have some fun, I've yet to have a dead coyote complain about what caliber I was shooting.

Bullet selection matters if you want to keep hides. I typically shoot them with a 223 but also use a 243 occasionally. With a controlled expansion bullet, and shots taken away from major bone structure, they leave a nice quarter size exit hole. Like stated above, you can rip a gapping hole in the hide with anything at the wrong angle.

I’m a fan of .243. Can shoot a variety of differnt weight bullets. 50-100 grain bullets. Heavier bullets are less affected by the wind at longer range if your shooting any distance.

243 is so much more versatile. I bounced around all over the place trying to find a dedicated coyote cartridge I loved. I went from 243 to 223 to 220 Swift to 2506, to 204 and I finally settled on the 6mm CM and have been happy with it. I know guys love shooting light and fast bullets, but I got so tired of the wind messing with shots over 250. I shoot 108 ELDMs in my 6mm and it has been a game changer for me. When the hang up at 500-750 yards, its still doable for me. I don’t even think about wind holds until they are at 500.
