270 Win anniversary celebration

My dad returned from the service in 1953, and purchased his first hunting rifle, a Remington model 721 chambered in .270Win. We hunted together over the years and that was his go-to rifle. He gave it to me a couple of years before he passed. I was going to just keep it in the safe as Dad’s gun, but I decided to load develop for it. Surprisingly, it was a shooter! I put a Grayboe stock on it to just protect the original wood stock. I also put a Maven scope on it (it’s first scope, dad shot open iron sights), and it’s a great deer rifle. Here’s a picture with my grandson, my dad’s great-grandson, harvesting a Texas Hill Country deer for the family table. I wouldn’t take $5000 for it.

It would be interesting to know what your .270 weighs. Mine is coming in at 7lb 10oz fully loaded. Just over 7.5 pounds. I honestly wouldn’t want it much lighter due to recoil. It’s not too bad but it is a bit snappy for shooting many rounds off the bench…you need to hang on to it.

There isn't much a 130 grain bullet at 3100 fps won’t unlive. I’m currently building a .280 AI on a Tikka and that will push 140s to 3200. Laser like…but more recoil. Aiming for just under 10 pounds final weight.

I have one at the gunsmith right now, should be done April-May. It was originally planned to be a 280 Ackley but it just seemed right to build it into a 270 given the year.

Not to mention ammo availability and price…a quick comparison is showing that solid .270 ammo is averaging less than HALF the cost of the least expensive 280 AI factory ammo that is available…SMH

If I had a favorite rifle, this .270 Tikka build would be it. It’s within an oz of 8# with 5 rounds in the mag(not including the bipod).
1) AG Privateer stock
2) Swarovski Z3 3-10 in the UM micro height rail mounted rings
3) UM rail level and recoil lug
4) mountain tactical bottom metal and SS action screws
5) pic/arca rail installed
6) lighter trigger spring installed

I picked this gun up used and on sale though it looked unfired.

Sub moa accurate with most factory ammo and very accurate with Federal Fusion specifically. I hope to nitride the barrel and action when I really have it dialed in.

I have been a 270 guy most of my life, starting out with an early Ruger m77MKII right after the old 30-30. This is My grandfathers Browning BAR 270. I never was a huge fan of the BAR but it was 1 of 3 rifles he owned in his life. He shot open iron sights with it until the last 2 years of his life going with a 3-9x40. I’ve had the rifle since he passed in 2009 and only shot it at the range. I decided 2 years ago to use Paws old gun a few hunts per year. First, I went back to irons and then wound up changing to a Williams peep and fiber optic front. 2023/2024 season, I killed an average 14” 8 point on public land and was very proud to use his gun. This is not only my personal best deer but also the second with Paws rifle. Deer was killed on 12/31/24, midday. 1 and done! 147 3/8”

I sure do miss him and am so thankful for him introducing me to the outdoors!

Loaded up some 130 partitions to keep it classic for this deer season. Tried to get them to group well over h4831 but ended up going RL23 which gave better accuracy. Now we wait on sweet sweet November

I also have one at the gunsmith in .270, hopefully be done before end of year, parts are all here just waiting on lathe time for barrel threading!

Started out aiming at 280ai for the cool factor and then figured maybe I'd be a better shooter if I shot 2x as much cheap ammo than if it had a 5% better BC.

Git a Winchester Model 70 + 20" barrel threaded for suppressor in a more vertical grip style stock moving away from a sporter.
