I have built a 270 WSM throated for the 170 berger EOL and plan on using it as my elk hunting rifle. Has anyone on here used this bullet on game and at beyond 500 yards. Were you pleased with how it performed at distance.

I shoot that bullet out of my .270 wsm. I've only killed 1 animal over 500 with that bullet. I shot a buck at 710 and dropped him. I shot a cow elk around 450ish and hammered her. Before the Berger I shot the 165 matrix and it did well too. Spike bull at 748 with the matrix.

The Berger works good up close as well. Shot a buck 2 years ago at 150ish yards and crushed him. I am shooting it at 3050 fps. Good choice!

So far in my early load developement I have seemed to found a node between 3030 to 3050 fps just tweaking the seating depths at this point. What you said is what I was hoping to hear. Its showing good promise to be a long range hammer with the barrel not even broke in yet.

Nice. What are the specs on your rifle? It's a fun cartridge for sure.

Yup I seem to have the same node, best accuracy was between .08 - .1 off the lands, I found it likes a lot of jump. I did a write up on this under the reloading area for my 270wsm.

I built it on a winchester M70 action. I opened up the mag well so I could load the bullets out a ways. Right now my COAL is 3.118 and that is .015 off the lands. When I chambered it I extended the throat to get the boat tail at the neck juncture of the case to utilize the whole case.

Nice. I built on a rem 700 long action. 28" benchmark 1-9 barrel. What barrel do you have on yours?

Hopefully if you do you shoot better than I did that day. 150 yards and I couldn't hit him! Well I hit him, but in all the wrong spots. Worst shooting I've ever done in my life. Don't shoot like me

I’m curious why either of you would choose a custom barrel in 270 over a 7mm. To me just the bullet choices alone would highly favor the 7 WSM.

I chose it simply because I like it. I shot a stock 270 wsm with 140 and 150 grain bergers for a few years. I like the cartridge and when I found the 165 matrix I built a gun. I don't mind being a little different and I've never had a deer or elk tell me they wished I would have used a 7mm or 30 cal.

My main reason is the rifle was 270 WSM before so I already had the brass ,dies, and other reloading components. Also just to be a little different from the norm not many people have custom 270 cal rifles.

Those are both very legit reasons. I’m a big fan of the 270 Win, but the lack of long range bullets leaves me desiring a 7mm.

I would venture to say that the 165 matrix and the 170 Berger are long range bullets. Maybe not quite as good as a few of the 7mm offerings but with a .650 g1 bc for the matrix and .662 g1 bc for the Berger they fly pretty dang good. I have shot the 165s out to just shy of a mile. I understand that there are better bullets but those 2 bullets aren't terrible choices.

Bigngreen is a big fan of the 170 Berger and 165 matrix and has first hand experience killing elk at distance with the 270 wsm.

While there isn’t a ton you do have the matrix 165 and 175 plus the Berger 170.

So it’s better then only one option. Oh then there is the 180 woodliegh but I wouldn’t call it Long Range. But a WSM has a short barrel life so you don’t really want to play with options too much.

Below: Nosler 150lrab, Berger 170, woodliegh 180 and matrix 175.
