I have a 28 in the works right now I have a 7lrm that shoots really well but is around 12lbs with the atacr. I am building a 28 with a fluted 3 contour and a vx6 hd 4x24 was wondering what kind of velocities the 28 is capable of with the 180 hybrids. I mainly shoot h1000 and retumbo

What barrel length? We saw 3180 with 83 gr Retumbo out of my buddy's 26" Fierce with the 195 EOL. That was max in his rifle.

With a 26" and H1000 I am running the 180 VLD's at 3080. Single digit es and shoot tight. I can push them another 100 fps or so

With a 26" barrel, my initial loads were clocked at 3044 with 81.5G of Retumbo.

Took that load out the other day and posted a .24" 3 shot group.

Are any of you guys shooting factory barrels? I have a Nosler factory 28. Any chance you could post your Coal? I'm wondering if I can get performance and still have loaded rounds fit in the magazine? Either way the performance seems to be there with the 180s .

I just got a Nosler Liberty chambered in 28 Nosler from our friends over at 1Shot Gear. I'll be testing it out with a couple popular factory loads along with some hand loads and will post up all the info as I go. Hoping to start shooting it Sunday.

I'm shooting a Proof Research 24" 28 Nosler. Of 6 loads so far, my best performing load was the factory 175 Gr. Nosler LRAB's @3105. My second best load was a 162 gr. ELD-X over 80 grains of RL25 @ 3145. (the image is turned on the target. The shots are in the top of the triangle) With our weather and range conditions, my shooting was done out of the back of my pickup off the top of the cab, so I'm guessing the group would tighten up on the bench.

If your going 28 nosler I don't know why a guy wouldn't shoot a 195 berger. Unless he didn't plan on reloading...

Couple of reasons. If you dont have a 8 twist barrel the 195's may not be stable.
Depending where your accuracy node comes in the 180's may out perform the 195's at the range you want to shoot

From talking to the guy who designed the 195, a 1 in 9 will spin them just fine.

I'm having a 28 Nosler built now. Hoping to run the 195's around 3100 with a 26" barrel in 8 1/2 twist. MY 7WSM that I'm converting to 28 was a great shooting rifle, but weighed too much. It ran the 180 Berger Hunting VLD around 2900. I didn't have good results with them on last year's antelope hunt. It just pencil holed an antelope that was quartering towards me. It went from front shoulder/neck area out the hind quarter. I'm hoping for better out of the 195 EOL bullet.

The velocity you will see will be dependent on what freebore you use for your reamer. If you go with a sammi spec reamer the coal is set to be under 3.4 and you wont see velocity much better then your current setup but also not have to worry about fitting into a standard mag box. A couple of builders who have spent a lot of time building these new shiny 28s have been reaming them for the 195's to have the bearing surface out of the case neck junction and still have jump. By doing this they have allowed for more case capacity and find that with the increased freebore they hit pressure signs much later due to pressure being released via freebore (the RUMs, 7stw, weatherbys ect. are set with long fb also this isn't a new principal). If you throat specifically for the 180s you shouldn't have a problem finding a node at 3200+ with your 28in tube. Alternatively you could run a wyatts box to increase your mag length and have your smith throat them for the 195's don't take my word as gospel but I think they run something like a .288fb for a coal at 3.7-3.73. With this design you still have the option to run the 175 ELD X because they are very similar in profile and you wont be jumping them too far. I know that several people with this throat setup have been finding a node with the 195s at 3100+ with rl33. This has turned into a bit of a ramble on stuff you didn't ask, the answer should have been 3100-3300fps. I'm sure you will love your new build, make sure to post up some pics when you get it!

My buddy just received his rifle back with a 28 inch proof he's going to be testing today with the lab radar I will see what he's shooting. His smith cut the chamber a little short it's touching the lands at 3.65 that's what I'm having my chamber cut for the 180 s he might have to get it reamed a little I was hoping for 3.75

I know this isn't 180s but it's close. My load was 175g ELD X at 3150 out of 26inch Ridgeline using Retumbo.
