30 Gibbs

Anyone on here ever build one? I know ballistically its a 300 WSM ish. But it might be a fun project. I know someone who killed a pile of elk with a 270 Gibbs. But I like efficient 30 Cals.

No Gibbs info but have a 30/06 AI and another being barreled currently. Shoot 165-190gr bullets out of ours currently.

The Gibbs version of an "improved" 06 is about the max you can get from that case and it adds a bit more to case capacity over Ackley's but I think it'll still be well short of the 300 WSM.

Lapua 30-06 brass is the most durable but in a Gibbs it leaves you with a pretty short neck. There's a fair amount of work involved making Gibbs cases. Many, neck it up then back down forming a false shoulder then fireform. I understand if you just want something different or you're bored and looking for a fun project but if it's about case capacity why not save yourself all the extra work and just go to something with a bigger case.

If you like efficient 30's and you don't mind fireforming maybe talk to Alex Wheeler about his 300 SAUM Improved. I think he's getting near 300 WSM velocities from the smaller SAUM case. Just a thought.

Yup beat me to it lol! But I don't think he has done much with it yet. One member over at LRH built a standard 30-06 with 26" Wilson barrel and reported 2900 fps with I think 208 ELDM and RL26. I remember seated out long so I think Remington 700 action. Some other people reported 2850 fps with 28" barrels and one person reported 2700ish fps with a 22" barrel and 212 ELDX (3.390" COAL?). I'd imagine a Gibbs or even an AI seated out long would be in the ball park, depending on the barrel.
