Have my first elk trip planned for this fall and currently waiting on my 300 PRC to get back from the smith. 24" Proof barrel on a Weatherby Mark V action with 3.73" box. While waiting for the rifle, I've acquired CCI 250, ADG brass, Retumbo, and H1000. For projectiles I've got 225 ELD, 205 Berger Elite Hunter, and 230 Berger Hybrid Targets. I've also worked up a half minute Retumbo/168 VLDH backup load for the 7 mag in the event that I run out of time for load development on the PRC.

Currently having an identity crisis about which bullet to roll with. Seems like there is little information out there about the 205's, and the 225 and 230 have pretty mixed reviews.

Our unit looks to be mostly shots under 300 yards, but there are a few areas I intend to look at that would have potential for 800+. Any suggestions or previous experience with any of these?

Id guess the 205 Berger will give you the most effective range out of a 24” barrel.

Ballistics I look for on elk is 1800 velocity (2000 fps for one piece copper bullets) and 1500 energy at impact.

225 and 230 will probably be velocity limited before the 205 is energy limited. Id guess an effective range from 7-800 yards.

Thanks for the response. That was kind of along my lines of thinking as well, but I haven't seen a whole lot out there regarding their performance. What I have seen has been positive though.

Any of those will work. Other options to consider are Berger 200.20x, 208 eldm, and the ever elusive Berger 215 hybrid. Supposedly the 200.20x is just a shortened 215 hybrid and 215's are killers.

I had a load developed with Berger 230gr otm for my custom 300prc. I just had my barrel cut from 26" to 20" for my new can that's still in purgatory. Might have to switch to 215's.

I’m convinced the 215 is a myth. Based on what I’ve read it seems like an incredible bullet for the PRC but it hasn’t been in stock in a long time.

Suppressor use is what made me go for a 24” instead of 26”. Just not sure I can get the speed I need for the 230’s.

They do exist as I have them in my reloading room. There are some on the broker for crazy prices.

My can is 9" and rated to 16" with a 300prc. I opted for 20". I'm still going to try the 230gr and see how it goes.

I shot 230gr Bergers last year. Killed a elk at 275 yards never moved. They shot amazing out of my rifle, the 212's do not shoot well. I have the 225gr to try and got 50rounds of the Berger 215's to try which I was told if the 230gr shoot well the 215's will.

How fast were you able to push them?

Saw a whole bunch of 215's this weekend at Scheels.

They're making a come back.

Thanks. This thread is pretty old. Since then I was able to grab 800 or so 215’s. I ended up at 2917fps with Berger 230 hybrid targets and N570. They shot great but have since moved to a 7prc with 18” barrel.

Rifle is currently up for sale in the classifieds.

I think the reason there isn’t much on 205 Bergers is because so many people like the 215 Hybrid in the 300 PRC. I have a 24” PROOF as well, my buddy coincidentally also built a rifle with a 24” PROOF. Both of us landed on the 215 Hybrids. Roughly .025” off the lands (3.700 OAL) with H1000. We both landed under book max for charge weight. I ended up taking my SAUM this fall. He did however go 2 for 2 on Muley and Pronghorn (618yds and 250yds). That bullet did some damage.
