300 WSM load shooting heavies

I have a 300 WSM built by HCA off with a 1:9.5 twist and throated deeper for heavier bullets (215 grain neighborhood). I tried H4350, 4831SC, and H1000 with 212 ELDX and 215 Bergers. Ended up with 67 grains of H1000 shooting 2600 FPS and .3-.4 groups.

It’s a little slow for me, and I’m worried about chasing velo with RL26 when I hunt in 20-110 degree temps. Wanting to be 2900 FPS or better. Any bullet or power recommendations to achieve that? Considering 200 ELDX or maybe lighter.

24” benchmark barrel. We settled on the load because we were cramming a week before a 15 day hunt in Mexico and stopped with the first accurate load we got. However, I think 67 grains is over the book max H1000 load, iirc. It’s crunching powder so I feel I would probably have to go to a different powder to get much more velo

Man I do not know what to tell you but try a different powder. H4350 didnt give you any speed. Heck Ryan Avery had a 20" 300 WSM and got 28 something with V555.

H1000 is too slow burning for a 300 wsm IMO. RL23, RL26, RL16, H4831 (not a velocity all star) seem a bit better.

Are you built off a medium or long action?

While plenty of people will post up their WSM with 215s over 2900, they are running hot with a high energy powder. No way around that.

For reference, the new world record 1000 yard heavy gun benchrest group was shot with a 30" barreled 300 wsm pushing a 220 berger lrht a blistering 2800 FPS over RL23. In your barrel length that load would also be in the 2600s.

My go to 200 ELDx 300 wsm load is around 2840 FPS in a short action 23" barrel behind a stiff charge of H4831. You could push it faster with a higher energy powder but without a brake in a lighter gun this is all the bark i need and it's extremely consistent.

Doesn’t solve the temp stability concern, but just for reference, I get 2780 with 200 partitions and RE19 out of a factory tikka.

Compressed loads are ok so long as the compression is minor. You can use a long drop tube and it will make the powder fit without compression.

Mike is building me a similar rifle that should be done in the next couple of months. At the time I asked him about it, he had told me 2825-ish fps with 215s out of his 24" summit barrels. I assumed this was with RL26 or similar. I think 2900 would probably be a big ask with that class of bullet at that barrel length. If your barrel is new, it should speed up a bit, but I wouldn't expect 2900+ in currently available brass with any powder. There's guys that claim it though.

Being that my stock of 215s is pretty low, I'm just gonna start with 200.20x hybrids and hope for accuracy in the 2850 area. I'd be pretty happy with that.

It’s a Tikka action so medium, I guess. Plenty of room to play with, currently shooting the 215s .020 off the lands. Thinking I may try a 200 grain bullet and a powder with more velo. I’d be happy with anything 2800+

If your compressed and not getting velocity, move to a faster burn rate powder. Thats the first thing that comes to my mind. I got around 2700(iirc) with 220 eld x, h4350 in a factory a- bolt short action wsm with 22in barrel

In my 300wsm I shoot 215’s and use RL26, my velocity is 2963ft/s. I’ve not had issues with different temps using RL26 and have shot it from single digits into the 90’s.
