Does anyone load up the 130 gr Accubond or Ballistic Tip for the 3006?

Is it a good idea? Accuracy? Killing power?

I shoot 150s right now and like the idea of stepping down to a lighter bullet.

The only reason to do this is recoil reduction imo. The "perfect" weight bullet in the 30-06 for ballistics is the 165 grain. The 130 speed is initially higher but it loses momentum/energy much faster than heavier bullets. That said, the 130 grain bullets will kill just fine inside of 300 yards but there really isn't any practical reason to do it as you really don't gain any advantages other than a little felt recoil vs the 150.

What are you planning to hunt and what distances?

I think it’s a great idea if you will enjoy shooting more. Not a good idea if wanting to shoot long range- past 500 yds.

Personally if I want to go lighter for hunting I would use a Copper bullet- lighter weight but better penetration, they work great with high speed! look at Hammer bullets, they are fast and super accurate, Barnes TTSX are always dependable.

130 ttsx was in use here for a bit when I had a .30-06. Shot well and reduced recoil. Win 748 got me to 3300fps but accuracy was not exactly steller, I remember settling on another powder, possibly H414 but velocity was 3100fps with 11/4" groups at 200 yards. Killed the snot out of deer and black bears particularly shot through the shoulders. I have friends using the 130 TTSX from .308's and 300 WSMs killing everything from gophers to elk and moose.

The 30 cal AB is 125gr and I load them in my '06 over Varget for antelope. Little flatter trajectory as they leave the muzzle at 3200fps. I like them for antelope because they are light skinned and smaller. As mentioned, lighter recoil is a plus because I can see my impacts.

Yeah I have tried it a bunch in 125-130 in about every thing made. hated the performance in my rifle. The 165-180's just plain worked better as it did in a couple of friends.

Not that they aren't accurate, just found my 7mm's where a lot better at running those lighter bullets.

Thanks, guys.

Shooting smallish deer inside 300 yds and maybe an antelope in a few years - rifle works great, keep trying to find a way to reduce recoil.

What I saw was about 3000-3100 fps and compared that to 270. Recoil chart only says a drop of about 2# over the 150s. But if I can get it to shoot decent, the 130s will kill anything I hunt for.

Something else to try/test and see how it works out of my rifle.
