Got a Remington 700 I have been wanting to work up a good shooting load for. If ammo was more readily available I wouldn't worry to much about it. It will shoot the 180gr Remington corelokts under an inch all day long. I started with H1000 and 195gr eld-m. With that bullet coal to the lands is 3.725 inch.

I made up 4 different loads. All the same length of 3.698 inches. Which is still a lot longer that the book shows.

89gr of H1000 shot 2.75 inch group
90gr shot 2 inch group
91gr shot 1.5 inch group
92gr shot 1.125 inch group
All at 100yds

Max load shows 94gr.

Should I keep going up in powder charge? Or play with coal?

Do you have a chrono? If so, find a good Velocity node, then tweak oal for accuracy. I know powders are scarce, but mine likes rl33.

Based on your results and if the manual says its safe, i'd definitely try the hotter loads just to see. You don't have to load them all that way if you're worried about running out of powder, but may be nice to know. may be worth it. I love some extra velocity as long as it's constant

If you can't decide, I like to shoot a group of each my final 3 different loads at 300-500 yards and there has always been a clear winner. good luck

Wouldn't hurt to run it up and see what it likes. Mine didn't do well with H1000. Shoots Retumbo and R33 pretty good but it loves IMR 8133. Of course I'm also running Berger 220's though

With 200 gr tlrs I run 95 gr of h1000 so I would bet you will find a node if you keep going. Another thought is on my experience the elds seem to like a lot of jump.

I like to load one round increasing powder charges to see where I get pressure signs first. Then, after I get to the results you are already at seeing the groups shrinking, I keep increasing the charge (under max of course) until the group starts to open up again. After finding that charge I try to load in the middle of the node. With that being said, my Rem 700 in 300 RUM likes Retumbo and N570. N570 is a little better.
