Few questions.

Snyder said the 357 is about 2 lbs lighter than the 44 mag w/ duplex light. My math says it's only roughly a pound less?

Can you fit an bone in elk quarter in the 357 bag? If not, it will make my decision easier.

Yes, the 357 will fit most bone in elk quarters. The calf muscle and hock will probably stick out of the top but the internal compression straps will hold the quarter tight to your back. I have been using the 357 for guiding this year and it is awesome. I haven't had to pack out and elk yet (got the truck to both archery bulls). I agree with hunting1, I would rather have my frame pack if I'm hauling multiple loads or heavy for distance. Hope this helps.
