36.45 grains a big FPS deal?

So I'm getting ready to order some new arrows from Black Eagle. Going with either the Rampages or the Deep Impact.

My current arrows are a 350 spine Victory setup and they weight right around 390 grains and shoot great. Here's what my potential arrow weights would look like between the Rampage setup vs. the Deep Impact setup:

Deep Impact .165" ID/ .240 OD
256.8 shaft grains (26.75" shaft)
38 grain outserts
18.5 grain vanes
5 grain "F" nock
100 grain point
418.3 grains Total

Rampage .204" ID/.261" OD
219.35 shaft grains (26.75" shaft)
7 grain "A" nock
18.5 grain vanes
37 grain outsert
100 grain point
381.85 grains total

My current setup has me at 320 fps shooting 70 lbs/29" draw out of a 2011 Strother Infinity. Had plenty of KE last year to blow through my bulls shoulder at 65 yards with that 390 grain Victory Arrow.

What say you? :)

I use this calculator to figure everything out. It is the closest to real numbers I have found.

http://www.backcountrybowhunting.com/articles/calc/

Using the specs from my bow, it looks like a difference of 11 fps. In my opinion, that is nothing. The advantages of the heavier arrow will far outweigh the loss in FPS.

Run your bow through the calculator and let us know what you come up with.

Looks like I can go with a different outsert (firenock AeroOutsert) and get my total arrow weight down to 410.3 grains.

This would drop my FPS from 320 to 314 fps, but my KE will only go up from 89 ft. lbs to 90 ft. lbs. I think at this point it's a moot point with the FPS and I'd like to try the smaller .165" OD diameter shafts of the Deep Impacts... Ordering a dozen up now!

Go with the 418 gr set up. KE is a flawed equation IMO. It measures force AT impact. Who cares? What matters is how much force is retained AFTER impact to keep that arrow cutting through. That comes from momentum. Momentum comes from weight! With a rangefinder and today's bow speeds, trajectory is near meaningless.

Same thing with long range firearms... I just placed my order, also ordered up some more fletching glue and vanes plus outserts and it was 150 to my door. Not bad... just gotta find someone to cut my shafts down now...

This could be a little late but I vote 390, love speed, I'm doing 389 gr with over 17% foc using nocturnals on speedpro 6.2 shafts, and would push 20% going to Easton microlite nocks then weight would be around 377 gr, and doin 304 fps with 29"/70lb specialist with 389gr...when u have nuff penetration anyhow then always go for speed IMO, velocity rocks

I actually busted out the chronograph tonight and I am at 306 fps with a 388 grain arrow. Funny as I still have the sticky note from when we tested the bow a year n half ago saying 319 fps.

On that note I should be between 405-410 grains with the new arrows and I think with the smaller micro shafts and outserts my penetration should be all I'll ever need! Will update when they arrive and i get them done up and tuned up!
I agree though, speed is pretty hard to beat if you still have enough KE.

Disagree, but whatever. Speed is just something that is easily quantifiable that guys brag about with their buddies. My number is higher than yours! Not going to argue about it.

I don't think anybody is asking for an argument. Everyone has their preferences and that's what makes this site great... :)

I shoot 70lbs, 27.5" draw, 457 grain arrow at around 280fps. If I was you, I would try and get into the high 400's on arrow weight and get around 290-300fps. Momentum is more important then KE.

Good choice, I am also in favor of cutting a little speed to add some punch. I've been shooting at deer with my bow since I was 16 back in the mid 80's. I don't know what it chrono'd at but I can guarantee my wood riser Proline Hurricane came no where near even 280 fps and it killed deer just fine with the heavy aluminum arrows.
I got some Deep Impacts coming this week as well, looking forward to doing some testing.

If that calculator is correct that PhillyB posted then with these new arrows I should be shooting around 300 fps with 83 ft. lbs on a 410 grain arrow. And considering I'm not hunting anything but mule deer I'm confident I'll have plenty of energy with this setup.

Quick question if anybody can answer... how much length do the outserts add to the arrow shaft? I imagine I'll get them in and see what the appropriate length to cut them to will be using an outsert instead of standard insert. Never messed with them before...

I'm not familiar with those shafts, but a standard outsert will be roughly 1 inch past shaft. The GT run a half inch but they're not standard.

Carbon express pile driver 350 at 29" and 478 grains. I have never shot them thru a chrono and don't feel I need to. They are accurate and bad news for anything they hit, that's all that matters to me. I think it's easy to get caught up in arrow speed, but that's not what puts an arrow thru a animal. Just my opinion, to each his own.
