6.5-300 wby or 300 wby

Looking to get into a bit more rifle hunting/ long range shooting and trying to decide on playing with the 6.5-300 or just go with the trusty brute 300 wby. Weatherby weathermark LT. Looking to hunt deer up to moose. Also curious what people are running for scopes. Any opinions appreciated.

If you’re just getting into LR, a 300wm can take you far. It’s still pretty hard to beat with tons of factory ammo and load data.

With that range of animals I’d go .300 and not look back.

With moose on the menu there's no question. Go with the 300 and use heavy bullets. Can't beat the 215 Berger for all around performance

Hard to find brass for the 6.5. Awesome gun though. I’d go with the 300.

300, it's just so versatile and it is a great moose round. Are you going to handload for it? Weatherby factory rounds do get rather pricey in a hurry.

I own both. definitely the 300 wby would be my choice. if you are going to reload, I would purchase the cheaper Weatherby ammo and shoot it for the casings. then reload whatever bullet you want. the 300 wby packs a punch and is a great caliber.

Thanks everybody for the info! I plan on reloading at some point, just not enough space or time! I’ll just pile up the brass until I can get into it!

You're gonna spend a lot of money shooting a 300 wby enough to be good at long distance shooting.. Not to mention recoil punishment.. I'd consider a milder cheaper cartridge to learn on.. I only say this cause you said "get into long range shooting"..

I choose the 6.5-300 as my go to rifle for all game from coyotes to moose. I have always preferred smaller calibers though. I have killed coyote, wolf, goat, sheep, deer, black bear, cariboo and moose with my 257. The 6.5 is just more of a good thing. Cant knock the 300 for sure but the 6.5 with a 140 accubond is my new go to. If we still had a grizz season up here in BC it would go on that hunt as well.

I run a 300 wby. Stuff goes down, fast, at basically any range I can shoot. Mine is an outfitter with Near alpha mount and VX6 HD. Added a timney trigger. Shoots 1/2.

300 wby is just hard to beat. My 300 wby ULW shoots lights out with 168 gr Barnes TTSX.

I know most don't shoot enough to burn up barrels. But from people, I know its SHORT in the 6.5.

The 6.5 is quite the caliber, crazy fast, almost like two creedmoors put together lol. But the 300 gets the win for any larger game shooting for me. Ammo is more readily available also

300 weatherby can be downloaded to 150 gr. all the way up to 220 grain depending on your tolerance to recoil.

I would take the small investment, get yourself a set of dies, single stage press and a beam scale. if your patient you can find all of this used for under $100.

that will really open up the potential of the 300 weatherby!

The 257 seems pretty badass! How is it to shoot? 6.5 or the 257?

My 257 is hanging out in the back of the safe now that I have a 6.5-300. It has served me well over the years so I will give it a rest while I get to know the 6.5 better. It certainly has a bit more recoil than the 257. I mounted a big zeiss 6-24 on it and will work towards banging the 1000 yard gong with it. I shot the 257 to 600 at the range and killed one goat at 487 yards. So far my 6.5 has one kill, a woof at 496 yards full length body penetraion with the 140 accubond I really enjot the small fast weatherby calibers
