Looking at having a new rifle built for the girlfriend. Will be used for deer, elk, bear, antelope etc. looking to be able to stretch it out a little ways on animals (500-600-700) and hopefully further at steel. I am really torn on which route to go. Love to here everyone's opinions. Thanks!

In my opinion, the 6.5 prc would be the better choice for stretching it a bit for deer and such and will out shine the 7mm08 in the 140 class bullets but since you brought in elk out to 700 yards, I would stick to a .284 or .308 caliber shooting heavier bullets. I have a 6.5 SAUM, slightly faster then a prc, and a 7mm08 and neither would be my first choice for a 700 yard elk shot. I would stick to the tried and trued 7mm mag with some 160 accubonds to keep the recoil down and be able to stretch it out there for elk.

Appreciate the input! I will say those longer distances would have to be the perfect situation and probably not on an elk. My goal is to never stretch it that far with small rounds but if the perfect situation presents itself then I guess it would be nice to be able to. I know people are pushing these calibers with some success. shes currently shooting a 7 rem mag but looking for something even more friendly to shoot and being able to go a little shorter barrel and such for packing. Also both would be fun new guns for me... I guess with all the technology out there i figure why not use it.

Both are great cartridges. I have a 7mm08 and my next rifle will be in 6.5PRC. I would use neither on elk past 400. Watched an elk shot with a 6.5SAUM at 500 last fall and even though it was a "perfect" shot, the elk took several rounds before expiring. But you definitely have a great reason to pick up another rifle.

I would roll the 6.5 prc.. and it's just fine on elk to 700 yards..
Ask Ryan avery what he thinks about them. I believe him and tanya both killed a few critters with it..
It will far outperform the 7mm08 in every way

I fallowed Ryan's thread and it definitely helped push me towards the 6.5 PRC. I was dead set on the 7-08 but my mind may have been changed.

I’m enjoying my PRC so far! I would go with that (obviously)

I will add to take care who you get to chamber it and their reamer based on your preferred bottom metal. I HIGHLY suggest a freebore in the .13X range if you want to use short action and dbm. Saami.188 won’t let you get to the lands. Mine is .130 and factory ammo is jammed about 10 thou. Shoots extremely well.

Thanks for the info and help I will keep that in mind! If I were to do it with builder I have in mind I may go long action and bdl. Maybe this is a mistake? They can go other routes but they recommend this and say it's been working really well for them. For the guys with the 6.5 PRC what barrel lengths and twist are you running? My plan for the 7-08 when I was set on it was keep it a little shorter at 22

I bought a Remington Model Seven SS in 7-08 with a factory 20" barrel last year and love it. 140 grain Partitions @2860fps and 120 grain NBTs @3000fps. It's very accurate and about as handy of a rifle that I've ever owned. The 6.5 PRC numbers hasn't impressed me. I'm getting better numbers out of what I already have.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd do the 7-08 again without hesitation.

What numbers out of the PRC haven’t impressed you? A 140 @ 2860 is Creedmoor territory not even close to what a PRC or 6.5 SAUM will do.

I'm running 160 grain Partitions at 2960fps out of my 22" barrel, so I have no need for a PRC. Are getting 2860fps with 140 grain Partitions out of your 20" barreled Creedmoor?

If you are a handloader and go the long action route, a .188 freebore reamer and reloader 26 turns the prc into a little monster.Go 1:7.5 twist barrel if you are doing custom ,it will cover the .264 heavies.

Awesome, thanks for the info! Do you think going with a 22" barrel vs 24" is a mistake? I will be running a brake so was hoping to keep it on the shorter side....

Maybe I missed it, so I'll ask you again. Are you getting 2860fps with 140 grain Partitions out of your 20" barreled Creedmoor?

You failed to answer my question earlier, so I'll ask you again. Are you getting 2860fps with 140 grain Partitions out of your 20" barreled Creedmoor?

I don’t have a 20” barreled Creed. It’s 2019, so I haven’t shot a partition out of any of the creeds I have owned. I’m getting 2820 out of a 22” barreled Creedmoor with 140 Berger’s.

Let’s break down some ballistics real quick. I’m not going to say the Partition is a good long range bullet but I’ll use your loads to compare. The op is interested in shooting to 700 yards.

So at 700 your saum pushing a 160 partition is going 1903 FPS with 106.6” of drop.

Your 7-08 with the 140 partition is going 1743 FPS and dropping -121.8”

A 6.5 prc with a 147 eldm is going 2249 started out at 3k with -96.3” of drop.

My 6.5 Creed load is going 2026 with -97.3 “ of drop.

This is all off 100 yard zeros. YMMV.
