Howdy folks. I have an oppertunity to trade into a Remington Mountain rifle in 7-08. I'm thinking I'll likely go ahead and do the deal. Anyone here have any experiance with such an animal? Thnks!

I have a remington Model 7 in 7-08. Great, great cartridge. I have killed antelope and mule deer with it, but would be fine with it for elk as well. Mine likes 140 TTSX @2800 fps.

It's my main deer and hog rifle here in the Southeast. I have shot well over a hundred deer with a 7-08 and never lost one I hit well. I had shot a 6mm rem for a long time but hogs moved into the area and they regularly toted off the 6mm bullets but nothing totes off the 7mm bullets down here. I think you will be very happy with how it kills and how easy it is to shoot and load for. For deer sized game it's a champ.

My daughter's rifle is a 7-08. I killed a hog with it a couple of years ago with factory ammo. I'd consider that caliber for a .25-sub.30 non magnum slot it the gun rack any day. DIJ speaks the truth...

I'm pretty anxious to go get the Mountain 7-08. I don't know when I'll get to it with the weather the way it is right now. The other fella and I are trying to get together somewhere about half way between our homes. After work, crappy weather and roads. I hope we can pull it off before the weekend. I have some 140gr Sierras here on hand along with some 120gr BTs and Hornadys. H4350,H4895 and a little Varget. I should have something there to get things started.

I have shot both h4350 and varget along with a couple others but I have settled on the h4350 in mine . The varget makes a sooty mess and heats the barrel much faster than the h4350. The best performing powder I used was w760 but I had really bad temp issues with it. I would bed it before I bothered working up loads and as it is a factory Remington barrel you can forget about reaching the lands. I'm shooting 139gr sst's over 49.7 gr of h4350 but I'm .002 off the lands now that I put a wyatts extend magazine in it. Before I could reach the lands and had a long jump I was running 50.4 gr of h4350 but when I loaded them up to the lands that was way too hot. Good luck , I wish I was getting a new toy this weekend instead of paying for my sons college registration fee's.

I am looking at a 7/08 for my middle daughter. I would have gone that route with brat the first, but I got a screamin deal on a .260 Rem, and all else being equal I like the better ballistics that the longer bullet gives me in the 6.5mm vs 7mm for the same bullet weight. I believe with my new hunter it will lead to fewer range estimation/holdover problems. If a I can't find another .260 when Brat the Second gets old enough to do some hunting 7/08 is my next choice.

Bosse's 13 year old daughter go one of the biggest cow elk I have ever seen with a 7/08 last year on a youth incentive/leftover/over the counter tag.

I agree about the 6.5 bullets and I'm lusting for a 6.5 saum wildcat but you can get a lot heavier bullet for the 7-08 to knock down bigger game . If you are going after elk on a regular basis then being able to load up some 160gr flat base bullets hot will give you some solid punch to 300 + yards. If you are only going for deer then the 260 has an edge but it doesn't cover as many things as well as the 7-08 imo.

Well no 7-08! The other party backed out on me. Ah man. FUDGE! (this is really hard not cursing) I sure want to. Oh well. Onward and upward I guess. Anyone here want to do a little rifle swappin'? How about a LA 284 M700 in a B&C Medalist? Nuts! There just aren't any family friendly words to express this, lol.

All depends on what you are going to be hunting and how. What are you wanting it for ? It's a great general round for deer sized animals.

I like that it falls right between the 243 and 308. The 308 is best suited for pills of 150/160gr. The 7-08 will bridge the gap between that and the 95/100gr 243 slugs. Good BC on the .284 bullets helps retain downrange energy and velocity. The 308 will handle the heavier bullets better in my mind. Very well suited to short action mountain weight rifles, the 7-08 is quite managable for recoil sensative folks too.

Disagree on a .308 being better than a 7-08 with 'heavy' bullets. Throat a 7-08 for 162 Amaxs from a 1:9" twist tube, and it will flat smoke it's parent case, ballistically. I've got a custom Seven in 7-08, and load 120TSXs just over 3100. Handy little deer rifle! Also, load 120Vmaxs to plink with, lots cheaper than TSXs for messin' around...

Dave, no disrespect meant but the 7mm-08 is also a darn good elk round. IME the .270 loaded with a 150 Partition at 2850fps is no better than a 7mm-08 loaded with a 140gr Partition at 2850fps. Thousands drop elk every year with 140's and 130's outa a 270. And if you load up a 7mm-08 with 120gr TSX at 3000fps not only will it out penetrate most 270 loads with 130 and 140 gr bullets it will also punch a bigger hole, retain more weight and use less powder. Awesome cartridge not limited to deer at all.

I've been looking into a rifle that is on 7-08! Not sure if I want one though.

Pretty darn nice Rem 700 in a HS Precession Stock(olive with black webbing) at the Gun Shop on 15th in Longview right now! Think its twisted for the lighter stuff though. But a 120gr TSX is a beast! The 120 BT is beefed up for the silhouette guys and cheaper to plink with.. I really like the rifle and almost bought it the other day.

Salmo , none taken and I couldn't agree more about the 7-08 being an awesome all around load. I'm going to load mine up with some 154 sst's and I'm betting I can bust through 2800fps with a hot load. I have a wyatts extended magazine in mine that lets me seat out to @ 2.95" col so a long bullet is not as deep in the case. Might even see what is possible with some 162gr sst's , maybe 2720fps ? Some reformed 308 lapua brass and cci primers and I should be able to really push the pressure.

Dave, that extended mag sounds like the cat's butt. Unfortunately my 700 mountain has a short throat. I can't seat 139gr Hornadys to the factory mag length and close the bolt. In that light, does anyone have a good 150gr pet load with a short cut or ball powder? I've been waiting for some Superformance data for the 7-08,but haven't found any yet.
