7mm-08 for elk

I have a 7mm-08 that shoot well under MOA at 100yd. My load for it is 140gr Accubond at 2960 fps. I would like to think if I do my part with shot placement that I could push it out to 500yd if there was no option for a closer shot. I know there are better cartridges for 500yd shots on elk. I have owned several of the hard hitters in the past and killed elk with them. Longest shot on an elk was 360 so far. So what are your thoughts on this 7mm-08?

That said, the 180 ELDM would offer superior performance in the wind and wound channel and would be where I’d start.

Not taking into account environmental and rifle specifics, you should hit 1800 fps about 565 yards. So to answer your question, "yes" from a ballistics perspective. Would confirm accuracy to at least max shot distances on game.

Carry on. That combination will perform on elk.

It’s an awesome elk gun out to 500 yards, more if you are shooting the right bullet.

It'll never kill an elk. You'll need a 200+ grain bullet out of something with MAG stamped on it....


Just kidding it's plenty for reasonable ranges. Not sure I'd want to push it past 500yds but it'll do under ideal circumstances. Broadside with a good bullet.

Between my friend and I we have about 5 elk with the 7mm-08. All were dead real quick. Hunting western Oregon though so longest shot was about 200 or 250yds. I think all of them were were with the Barnes 140 tsx. One might have been with the federal fusion ammo.

Have not used my 7mm-08 on elk yet, but I would have no reservations. My 6.5 CM has taken a bull at 535 yds. 1st shot would have killed him quickly, second shot put him down where he stood. Didn’t go 5 yards after being hit. 7-08 is slightly superior with comparable bullets. I use the 143 gr eldx factory loads in my CM. If it were me, I’d push the 150s with the 7 but that’s just me

I think you would be fine to 500 yards. I shot a bull with my wildcat AR15 chambered in 7MM Valkyrie. I was shooting 7MM 140G Accubonds with a muzzle velocity of 2,650 (20" barrel). Impact velocity was ~2,200 FPS at 240 yards. With my 7VAR calculations show the bullet would still be 1,800 FPS at 500 yards. I hit him three times in the lungs and once in the neck in about three seconds. He dropped where he stood. Probably only needed one shot but I got a bit trigger happy seeing as how this was my 1st bull and I was on a solid rest . Caught all four bullets on the offside hide.

All day long. 140 or 150 grain bullets with the word nosler in the description are your friend. I use partitions on bull flavored elk, we shot some cows this year with 150 ballistic tips and they did just fine.
