7mm. v. 30cal.

im looking to build an elk gun, for humane (obviously) shots out to like 700yds. weight of the gun, and finding ammo are not a big deal, but im torn between the 7mm. Rem. Mag. or the 300 winmag? thoughts? im just worried about retained energy.

A bigger hole is always more effective.

I believe Broz has quickly compared the two cartridges and he was pretty emphatic that the 308 caliber was more effective then 7mm. Might be worth looking him up.

300 WM all the way. Most versatile cartridge in America. However, the 7 will get it done but I love my 30 cals.

An awful lot of elk have been killed with both and I don't think that 700yds is really pushing the limits of either cartridge as long as the shooter is up to the task. That said, I don't think that many people would say that the 7mag is better for elk then a 300. I'm gonna have to say 300 win mag for elk and I shoot a 7mag.

Be real handy if you could shoot them first. I liked the 300 on paper and game better, but I'd rather shoot a 7mm.

I like and use the 7 Remy. To me the recoil of the 7 is not as great as the 300 and I shoot it better. I've punched 26 elk tags using my 7mm Rem so yes it works effectively.

IMO either...I shoot a 7 mag but would shoot a 300 win in a heart beat. To me they fill the exact same niche.

If you’d be interested in any other calibers the 28 Nosler is a real shooter. 195gr Berger EOL sustains enough energy to kill past 1200 effectively. But you both calibers you mention will get the job done. I have a 300 win I enjoy a lot.

I have both rounds and both have performed on elk, deer, speed goats, gophers. The lighter 300s can be a bit more punchy on the shoulder than a 7 mag but not by much. If you find a deal on a rifle you like and it happens to be in either chambering, buy that sucker and start launching rounds.
