Been shooting 6.5 saum for a few years and with a new build in the future I’m thinking of making the jump up to 7saum for this one. Something about the 180 eld m at 2900 sounds perfect.
Any other 7saum shooters on here? Let’s hear your thoughts on it. How fast can I expect to push a 180 out of a long throated chamber with a 24” barrel? Any cons I am missing? The lightest bullets I’ve been shooting from my 6.5 are 120s and it seems like guys are shooting those from the 7mm version also so no loss on the lower end of bullet weights

I love my 7 SAUM. Mine is a Remington Model Seven SS with a factory 22" barrel. I'm shooting 160 grain Partitions and Accubonds with equal accuracy. I'm getting around 2960-2980fps. This setup seems about perfect to me.

I suggest you look at Richard Sherman's 7mm SS Max case, it's a 7 saum blown to 40° shoulder, and taper is dramatically reduced, increasing capacity to 78gr, he uses great adg brass and is headstamped. It does need fireformed, and you can use any regular 7 saum as parent, however I will recommend you use ADG/Gunwerks brass as the reamer is designed around its neck thickness. He's had 195s over 3k fps w/ drop tubed N570 from a 26" barrel. I recently purchased dies/reamer for a build!

I’ve read up on that a little bit and it looks pretty badass but I don’t know if I want to get into all that

I have a 7 saum built on a MPA TI short action -wyatts extended mag, manners stock and Christensen 24" barrel 1-9 twist. I pretty much get the speeds according to book data using a magneto speed. (I see many reported speeds that are hard to believe) I had a really accurate load with the 162 eld m and h4831 at 2880 fps. - verified at 600 yds.

During testing I was able to get the 162 up to 2990 with RL23, and 2970 with H4831 but was hitting pressure (barely) and not as good groups. I recently got some 180 eld-m to test, but will see with my 1-9 twist if it stabilizes.

If you want the 180 eld-m comfortably at 2900 I would say go 26" for sure in a 1-8 twist and try RL 26.

I have one in the works right now with a 28 inch barrel and I’m going to ruin a gain twist for it should shoot 177 hammers at 33 and change. Top notch guy too

I was hitting 2900+ with 180 eld and r26 out of a 1-8 22" barrel. Just never could get them to shoot.
It loves the 162 eld at around 2920 with h1000
Trying the 183 SMK with h1000 now

I had the good luck to find one in a pawn shop.

Rem Model 7 22"

It's a one holer with 150, and 160g partitions, bt's, and loves accubonds.

I just can't get any speed out of it.

2770 with 4831sc at almost max load.

So its basically an expensive/obscure 308 that's hard to find brass for.

I should rebarrel it, but it shoots such tiny groups it's hard to chop it up.

I can't get H4831SC to shoot anything fast out of any of my rifles.

RL26 and IMR7828SSC will wake that SAUM up. 2900+fps with 160 grain Partitions should be easy to get. At least, it is in mine.

7saum and the 280AI are pretty much ballistic twins. In my current 24’ proof barreled 280 ai I’m running the 175 Berger’s at 2930 with RL 23, got up to 2975 but was getting a good bit of ejector swipe. I got the Sierra 165 game changers to 2975 with h1000. These are labradar speeds not verified at distance. Had a 26’ 280 ai and was pushing the 168 Berger’s at 2930 with h4831sc. Probably gonna try that load in the proof.

For the guys not getting to big speeds have you tried re26? My current 6.5 saum runs 3180 with h1000 3220 with imr 7977 and 3288 with re26 all with 130 jlk s

I am running 180 hybrid out of short action w/ 26” barrel loaded to mag length about 2.95 for alpha mags with retumbo at 2956 FPS. Absolutely love the round and about to rebarrel it with a proof

Tried the 180 eldm out of my 24” CA barrel SAUM and was getting 2900 easy with H1000. Slight stiff bolt lift but had a node with about 61-62 grains and all holes touching on the ladder.

Will have to shoot some groups and see what it likes, but should work well. I tried the 180s with h4831 and was about 100fps slower.
