Odin is 3.5 and our 3rd chocolate lab since 1996…he is and has been a crazy dude🥰….he gets a hour walk with mom at 5:30 am he then gets another hr walk with me in the late afternoon…mine is off leash and he gets to meet other dogs some days….on the weekends he gets one long day with me in the mountains….he then gets Antler chew time each day in the cave and craves this time…he runs the house and has the life of Odin🥰 at this stage he just watches my eyes or expression and knows what time it is…..he also is super smart and devious and keeps his old parents on their toes🥰🤙

Either you train your dog or he trains you.

As to a beagle as a pet, wonderful dog but you better like barking and any scent he finds interesting and he is off to the races.

GWP. 9mos. First working/hunting dog.

I take him on 1-3 bike rides a day ranging from 1-3 miles each. He gets a few minutes of supervised ‘play’ with our other dog (non-hunting rescue) once or twice a day until they are winded.

I realized early on I was trying to over train. Too long of sessions and asking too much. Once I got things sorted out, I can do several formal training sessions a day but only 5-10 mins each. Some shorter, some longer. I like to train different things in the sessions throughout the day to keep him engaged, not the same activity over and over… behavioral training is 24/7 365.

Dog is now, never left unsupervised (after making that mistake a few times being lazy). He is either crated, at heel, on down/stay or being watched while free roaming with a training collar on to reinforce any corrections.

I will say go with your gut. If you think a breed is not a perfect fit for your family, it probably isn’t. It’s not fair to you or the dog to ‘force’ the situation.

Great tips and info! Love reading and learning from people that have been around and have more experience than I do.
