Arizona Mule Deer Help!

This might be a silly question, but am going to ask anyways...will a call made for Whitetail work for Mule deer? I assume rattles made for whitetail will work for mule deer, but you know what they say about making assumptions....

i've tried grunting rutting mulies in and they left the unit so it's spot n stalk for me now. tried rattling too with the same result. i've ordered the Heads Up Decoy. i hope i get it in time to use it this year.

I've tried rattling near the peak of the rut and it didn't work, only alerted deer to my presence. I've read some of Walt Prothero's stuff and he has had success in the pre-rut, like mid to late October.
Having watched dozens and dozens of mule deer sparring matches and not witnessed another buck come to investigate makes me wonder about it.
I'd say if you really got after it and learned it, it could be another tool.
