I thought I'd start a thread with an aviation theme. The sheep section of this forum seemed to be the place to do it. Surely among this crowd there are some exceptional plane related photos. I for one have always been comfortable with the aviation skills that I've encountered in the back country. I try to keep a stoney face, but sometimes just have to pass on my admiration for the acrobatic skills of the pilot:]

Work and playing in the north, I have likely taken a thousand photos of helicopters and airplanes. I'll just post a few from my hunting files.

This one of me and my son (1 yr old at the time) at a lodge in the Alaska Range.

And one of my all time favorite bush planes, a Dehavilland Otter with a 1000 hp Garrett turbine conversion. The STOL capabilities of this aircraft are unreal.

2010 solo sheep hunt. Supercubs are my other favorite bush plane

2011 sheep hunt. Landing right on the tundra.

A landing strip we used in the summer of 2012. Basically a boulder field, but the 35" tires on the supercub just rolled over it all. There was a creek at 120 paces, but the pilot deemed that much "plenty long enough" and we got in and out in that length without issue.

This picture from a transfer "strip" where hunters would move from the larger Cessna 206 aircraft to supercubs for the final leg into the sheep mountains. We had some bad weather during the 2012 sheep season, and when it cleared off late in the afternoon a entire fleet of cubs was hauling hunters out of the mountains headed to town, while a pair of 206's was hauling the next wave of hunters in from the city. We all met on this un-improved gravel bar, and for about half an hour it looked like we were going to need to install a traffic control tower!

To me, going for a plane ride is a huge part of the adventure.

Here a couple shots of Rust's Flying Service Otters. Like Yellowknife said, an awesome aircraft.

Very cool thread!
I'm reviewing some of Billy Molls DVD's for our Rok Blog right now and I loved the supercub and float plane action in them as much as the hunting!

SJ-AK...

That last pic with the Otter was taken very recently... You fly for Rust's?

Yk

I don't fly for them, I have a close friend who works there. He sends me pics as pilots we all love plane porn!

That's awesome! I have been trying to convince the wife I need a plane, but apparently she doesn't want to have to live in a 5th wheel so I can afford to buy one. :)
