My friend and I are traveling to Southeast Arizona in mid January. He's hunting for mule deer or coues deer, he hasn't decided yet. He also hasn't decided what unit either.

I'll be tagging along with my recurve and hope to get some shots at rabbits, squirrels, and quail. Any pointers on what type of habitat to look for? Elevations? Habitats to avoid? In addition to not having a set destination, we might bounce around to different areas to see what's up.

In the desert areas, For quail look along the sand washes. Call in the mornings and late afternoons (mainly mornings). There's lots of birds north of Willcox and south of Safford. Shouldn't have a lot of issue finding bunnies either. I've seen tons of quail all throughout those units. Just practice calling and be out there early. If you get on an area that runs cattle, hang around the cattle watering tanks. Should be a good amount of birds in those areas. Good luck, should be a successful hunt.
